Electronically commutated motors are electric brushless motors with permanent magnets situated on the rotor. These electronically commutated motors are long lasting because of having less physical contact within the moving components. Their benefit over others is that these motors consume less electricity as compared to induction motors. So they are used in various application in the ventilation & refrigeration industry, electric vehicles, cordless tools also, they have use in industrial engineering, motion control systems, aeromodelling, positioning & actuation systems, radio control cars, and others. 

The reason behind their growth at decent pace at expected time is their growing popularity in various end-use industries of the global electronically commutated motors. Although ECMs have features to run with an AC power supply, it is important to note they are actually direct-current motors with permanent magnets on their rotor. Unlike conventional DC motors, which create a rotating magnetic field with a combination of brush contacts and slip rings, ECMs achieve the same effect with a voltage rectifier and an electronic control circuit. As a result, the friction and sparks associated with brush contacts are eliminated, and this is one of the reasons why ECMs are so efficient. They also have a longer durability than brushed motors, since the wear associated with sparks and friction is eliminated. Compared with other common types of fractional horsepower motors, ECMs are the top choice in terms of efficiency. ECMs are normally the most preferable option in fractional horsepower applications as they tend to have the highest savings when used in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.  They dissipate less heat, which helps AC and refrigeration systems to operate more efficiently. This effect applies for all air-conditioning or refrigeration components that are found inside the conditioned space, such as air handlers and evaporators.
