Infant Phototherapy Devices Market Overview:

The Global Infant Phototherapy Devices Market was valued at $71,730 thousand in 2016, and is expected to reach $103,745 thousand by 2023, growing at a CAGR of 5.3% from 2017 to 2023. Phototherapy refers to the use of light for treatment of jaundice in infants. It is the most common method to minimize bilirubin (the compound that leads to jaundice) levels in infants. During phototherapy, an infant lies in a plastic crib, and is exposed to a type of light that is absorbed by its skin. During this process, the bilirubin in the infant’s body is converted into a much simpler water-soluble form that can be easily excreted through stool and urine.

Rise in prevalence of neonatal jaundice, effectiveness of phototherapy over other treatment methods, and technological advancements in the field of infant phototherapy drive the growth of the global infant phototherapy devices market. However, side effects of phototherapy treatment are expected to impede the market growth. On the contrary, huge market potential in the developing regions is expected to offer lucrative opportunities for market expansion during the forecast period.

Infant Phototherapy Devices Market Segmentation

The global infant phototherapy devices market is segmented on the basis of light source, configuration, end user, and region. Based on light source, the market is classified into fluorescent lamps, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), quartz halogen lamps, and gas discharge tubes. The configuration segment is bifurcated into mobile device and fixed device. Infant phototherapy devices may be used in hospitals, and neonatal clinics. Depending on region, the market is analyzed across North America (U.S., Canada, and Mexico), Europe (Germany, France, UK, Italy, Spain, and rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific (China, Japan, Australia, India, South Korea, and rest of Asia-Pacific), and LAMEA (Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and rest of LAMEA).

Segment Review

Infant phototherapy devices use different types of light sources for treatment of neonatal jaundice. These light sources are categorized as fluorescent lamps, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), quartz halogen lamps, and gas discharge tubes. Fluorescent lamps are long tubes and folded tubes, which emit white and blue light. They serve as a cost-effective option for use in phototherapy devices. However, the light intensity and irradiance of fluorescent tubes reduces with time. They work efficiently for 1,000‐2,000 hours of use, after which they are replaced. Conversely, the intensity of LEDs does not decrease with time, and they last at least 3,000 hours of use. In addition, they are comparatively less fragile, and do not produce high heat as their spectrum is concentrated in the blue region of the visible light.

Based on configuration, the infant phototherapy devices can be fixed or mobile. Mobile devices are convenient to use, as they are portable and can be shifted anywhere according to the need. This is especially beneficial for rural hospitals with limited resources and inexperienced staff to successfully treat neonates for jaundice.
