Linear low-density polyethylene is a kind of linear polymer which was first produced by DuPont in 1959 in Canada, with a number of short branches formed by copolymerization of ethylene with different long chains of olefins. It is like a part of the poly-olefins family which has some structural differences from conventional LDPE (Low-density polyethylene). The linear property of the polymer results from the difference in the manufacturing processes of linear density polyethylene and low-density polyethylene.

Usually, linear low-density polyethylene polymers are produced at comparatively lower temperatures and pressures by the co-polymerization of ethylene and higher alpha-olefins such as Butene, Hexene or Octene. Their difference in the co-polymerization process also results in a difference of molecular weight distribution of LDPE and linear low-density polyethylene resins, as these polymers have narrower molecular weight distribution than LDPE polymers. It exhibits higher tensile strength, impact and pressure resistance as compared to the conventional LDPE polymers which make linear low-density polymers suitable for a wide range of applications and uses. Linear low-density polyethylene resins are used primarily as films for bags and sheets or in the packaging industry. It is also used in the manufacturing of other goods such as toys, lids, buckets, plastic containers, bubble wraps and composite films.

Covid-19 Impact Analysis

  • The coronavirus's unfavorable global effects are already evident, and they will have a big impact on the linear low-density polyethylene in 2020.
  • The World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency after the COVID-19 virus outbreak in December 2019. The disease has spread to over 100 nations and resulted in massive deaths all across the world. Exports & Imports, global manufacturing, tourism, and financial sectors have all been heavily damaged.
  • The downward pressure on the global economy, which had previously shown signs of improvement, has escalated once more. The outbreak of the virus has added danger factors to the international economy's already sluggish development. Many international groups have stated that the global economy is experiencing its most difficult moment since the financial crisis.
  • The lockdown has resulted in hampering the imports and exports of various goods. Also, the uncertainty created in the market in the consumers’ buying pattern has resulted in hampering of the linear low-density polyethylene.

Top Impacting Factors

Growing demand for packaged food products, particularly in emerging countries of Asia Pacific is expected to be the key driver for LLDPE market growth. In addition, growing usage of protective films in agriculture to reduce soil erosion and protection against UV rays is also anticipated to fuel market growth over the next six years. Growing use of LLDPE films in construction industry as moisture barriers under the concrete structure is also likely to augment market growth.  However, stringent regulations regarding usage of non-biodegradable plastics in several parts of Europe and North America may hamper growth of the LLDPE market.

Market trends

  • Changing food habits across the globe is a key driver for the LLDPE market.
  • LLDPE films are used extensively in the food packaging industry as these films are impact-resistant and enable immense tensile durability. Adoption and preference for packed food and beverages, frozen foods, and ready-to-cook food products is growing at a significant rate due to changing lifestyles and improved standards of living. This has resulted in higher demand for LLDPE films for packaging, which in turn, is expected to drive growth of the global linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) market.
  • Growing demands for different kind of films is also bolstering the market demand.
  • Films are the largest sector of linear low-density polyethylene market contributing to more than half share of the market demand. Demand for films (agricultural films, stretch films, lamination, heavy duty sack and personal care film etc.) are majorly driving the demand for linear-low density polyethylene market.
  • Growing use of injection molding also contributes to the market growth.
  • Injection molding is another crucial application of linear low-density polyethylene. Injection molding is a part manufacturing technology and is used to manufacture plastic products such as pocket combs, automotive dashboards, bottle caps, and wire spools. Advantages of injection molding are better-finished parts, minimal scrap losses, low labor cost, repeatable high tolerances, and high production rates. Thus, increasing application of injection molding augments the linear low-density polyethylene market value.
