Steels that are known for their strength, toughness, and ductility are known as maraging steels, where the word is derived by a portmanteau of "martensitic" and "aging". Here the term "aging" is used to describe the extended process of heat-treating. The steels in this category are very low carbon, ultra-high strength steels, which are a special class of steel with extremely high strength, a steel whose strength is derived from intermetallic compounds precipitated rather than carbon itself. The primary alloy used in maraging steel is 15 to 25% of nickel and secondary alloy used are metals such as cobalt, molybdenum and titanium, which are added to form intermetallic precipitates.
