Neonatal monitors are specialized monitors used to track and record vital signs of critically unwell neonates & babies, including their temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, and ECG. These specialized monitors provide several advantages, including improved operation, increased safety, and excellent accuracy. On a parent's or guardian's smartphone, the system sends the baby's heart rate, oxygen levels, skin temperature, sleep quality, and sleep position (with rollover alerts).

In addition, increase in preterm births and growth in public awareness of neonatal care drive the global monitoring market. In November 2022, World Health Organization (WHO) had stated that premature delivery is responsible for over 3.1% of the world's illness burden, leading to roughly 1.3 million incidents of newborn mortality globally. This analysis was based on the prevalence of preterm birth based on high-income countries (9.3%), middle-income countries (11.3%), and low-income countries (11.8%) rates of preterm birth. In addition, rise in public-private funding for targeted research initiatives and increase in product innovations & development due to global technological improvements will create lucrative prospects for market players. In future, the market's growth rate will be further accelerated by factors such as people's unhealthy lifestyles, increased internet usage, continued product development and commercialization, and rising per-capita health care spending.

On the other hand, the market growth is anticipated to be hampered by high costs associated with research & development activities, lack of adequate infrastructure, inequality in the distribution of medical services, shortage of qualified medical professionals, and lack of awareness of using neonatal monitoring devices in developing nations. In addition, the market is expected to face challenges from a lack of favorable reimbursement scenarios technology penetration in developing economies, high procedure costs, limited insurance coverage and regulatory compliance, and a lack of adequate infrastructure in low- and middle-income nations.

Rise in R&D spending, particularly in established & developing countries, is further expected to expand the neonatal monitor market for medical devices and technology. According to the National Vital Statistics Reports, nearly 20,854 cases of fetal mortality at 20 weeks or more of gestation were reported in the U.S. in 2020. This emphasizes the urgent requirement for neonatal care supplies. Another significant element promoting market growth is the increase in focus on improving healthcare facilities and infrastructure. Further, an increase in public-private partnerships, strong partnerships for funding, and implementing of new & improved technology are opening up attractive market prospects.

For market growth, new products must be introduced

To help clinicians quantify blood flow in various point-of-care diagnostic applications, including cardiology, vascular, abdominal, urology, obstetrics, and gynecology, Philips added advanced hemodynamic assessment and measurement capabilities on its handheld point-of-care ultrasound, Lumify, in February 2022. The Evita V600 and V800, as well as the Babylog VN600 and VN800, devices for acute care ventilation of adults and preterm babies, were introduced by Dragerwerk AG & Co. KGaA in May 2020 and made commercially available globally.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Nuvo Group permission to add a new uterine activity module that enables remote monitoring of uterine activity, in June 2021. Nuvo Group is a private company that markets INVU by NuvoTM, an FDA-cleared, patent-protected, prescription-initiated remote pregnancy monitoring platform (UA). With this authorization, INVU is able to offer an accurate, passive replacement for the current UA measurement techniques. INVU does not require any intrusive components or in-hospital or in-clinic procedures because it simply uses external sensors.

In order to support fetal and maternal monitoring, Philips introduced the Avalon CL Fetal and Maternal Pod and Patch in the US in June 2020. Applying the single-use, 48-hour, disposable electrode patch to the mother's abdomen enables continuous, non-invasive monitoring of the mother's heart rate, fetal heart rate, and uterine activity.

Segment Overview:

By product: A short flexible tube called an intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) is introduced into the uterus and placed between the baby and the uterine wall as a method of internal monitoring for contractions. In contrast to external monitors, it gives accurate readings of contractions.

By portability: The parent can transport portable, battery-powered radios throughout the house. The transmitter is often plugged into an AC outlet and remains close to the newborn crib. Several bundles of baby monitors come with two receivers. For instance, Saans, a low-cost portable device offers respiratory assistance to infants in a non-ICU setting. This product meets a crucial demand in labor and delivery facilities. After the success of a pilot project using specialized technology called SAANS to lower infant mortality, the Assam government has chosen to adopt the air pressure machine created by a Bangalore-based start-up in all of its hospitals in September 2022.

By method: Non-invasive carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring is routinely utilized in critical care, anesthesia, and, more frequently, in newborns. End-tidal and transcutaneous CO2 monitoring are two popular non-invasive techniques. The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and the American Academy of Pediatrics advise using a colorimetric CO2 detector (a modified end-tidal CO2 detector) to confirm endotracheal tube placement. Continuous CO2 monitoring is useful in determining the trend of PaCO2 in critically unwell newborns receiving respiratory assistance and may help to identify and minimize PaCO2 changes.

By application: While intrapartum electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) procedures are highlighted, supplemental methods including foetal scalp pH sampling and evoked fetal responses are both useful and effective. As a precise, unbiased, and repeatable technology that demonstrated early fetal hypoxemia or acidemia—which often comes before serious foetal neurologic damage—continuous EFM was eagerly adopted.

By end User:  The availability of specialists and the presence of cutting-edge technology to better patient care are factors influencing the expansion of the hospital segment. Moreover, the high patient load and rising number of NICUs in hospitals are fueling segment expansion.

By region: North America has the highest demand for cutting-edge technical products, resulting in better healthcare delivery. Establishing well-equipped NICU facilities and increased FDA approvals for these devices are the results of the value-based healthcare strategy. For instance, the FDA granted Nuvo Group's INVU system, a ubiquitous pregnancy monitoring device, supplementary 510(k) approval in June 2021 to add a new module for monitoring uterine activity. These programs are expected to accelerate market expansion in the U.S.
