Yankee dryer is a type of pressure vessel, which is widely used in companies that produce tissue paper or tissue paper-related products. For tissue producing companies, it is important to remove excessive moisture present in the pulp before starting the next process. Yankee dryer is used so that excessive moisture can be removed from the pulp. Therefore, Yankee dryer is a very important machine in the pulp & paper industry as it removes large amounts of moisture in very less time, following which the pulp can be processed to produce paper.
COVID-19 scenario analysis:
Yankee dryer is considered as an effective and efficient component in the pulp & paper industry. By using Yankee dryer, paper that is 40 to 45% dry can be dried up to 90%, which is very effective in terms of drying capacity. To make the paper sticky, doctor blade and adhesives are used with Yankee dryer.
The cylinders of Yankee dryers, generally made by using cast iron material, are measured 6m in diameter that is much larger than the diameter of traditional drying cylinders. The width of the cylinder is larger than the width of the paper. The cylinder comes in different width sizes such as 1.75 m, 2.30 m, and 2.7 m. In some companies, the width of the cylinder is more than 2.7 m. Due to the large diameter and large width size, Yankee dryers are much heavier and not easy to cast. In addition, steel is also used for the manufacturing of Yankee dryer cylinders as steel is lighter in weight, thus reducing the overall weight of the cylinder. Yankee dryer offers various applications such as enabling heat transfer, supporting creeping process, and drying of the pulp. These are important processes in the production of tissue paper.
Yankee dryers are used so that the surface can be provided for creeping purpose. Creeping is carried out by using hot air hoods. The drying of the pulp depends on various factors such as heat transfer ability of material, diameter of cylinder, and thickness of the cylinder. Yankee dryers are used to compensate the temperature difference in the dryer, internal steam pressure, and loads of doctor blade. In addition, uniform load can be produced with the help of Yankee dryer. The dryer consists of different components such as condensate headers, steam collecting pipe, riser pipes, rotary joints, bearings, soda straws, heads, and shells.
Many companies in the market enter into mergers and acquisitions with companies from the same market to gain competitive advantage over the other companies. For example, in November 2018, Paper Machinery Producer (PMP) Company, one of the key players in the pulp & paper industry, signed a contract with Poland-based FP Kaczory paper mill. PMP is expected to provide technologically advanced dryers such as Intelli-YD steel Yankee dryer to the FP Kaczory paper mill. Inntelli-YD steel Yankee dryer is cost-efficient and an effective machine, which is used in the pulp & paper industry.
Yankee dryer comes in large diameter and large width size. Therefore, the transportation of Yankee dryer is very difficult and to cast. These factors could restrain many companies to use Yankee dryer and they could prefer conventional drying machine over Yankee dryer.
