According to a new report published by Allied Market Research, titled, “Nanotechnology Drug Delivery Market," The nanotechnology drug delivery market size was valued at $87.5 billion in 2022, and is estimated to reach $209.5 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 9.1% from 2023 to 2032. Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field that involves manipulating matter at the nanoscale, which is the scale of atoms and molecules. It focuses on creating and utilizing materials, devices, and systems with unique properties and functions at this tiny scale. In the healthcare industry, nanotechnology has emerged as a powerful tool for improving drug delivery systems. In nanotechnology-based drug delivery, nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers are employed as carriers for drugs or therapeutic agents. These nanoparticles may be engineered to have specific properties such as surface charge, size, and shape, allowing for precise control over their behavior in the body. This level of control enables the nanoparticles to navigate through various biological barriers and reach the target site effectively.
Factors that drive the growth of nanotechnology drug delivery market include, surge in prevalence of chronic diseases, and technological advancements such as advanced drug delivery techniques with the help of nanotechnology to improve therapeutic effect of the drug. The surge in the prevalence of chronic diseases has indeed become a major driver for the nanotechnology drug delivery market. Chronic diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and neurological conditions, pose significant challenges in terms of treatment effectiveness, patient compliance, and minimizing side effects. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in 2020, an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases were recorded and nearly 10 million individuals died from cancer-related causes. The global burden is expected to increase to 27.5 million new cancer cases and 16.3 million cancer deaths by 2040. By using nanotechnology, drug delivery systems may be tailored to meet specific needs.
For instance, a nanoparticle was created by researchers at the University of Queensland to transport a chemotherapy drug into rapidly growing and aggressive brain tumors. The chemotherapy drug faces certain limitations, such as a short duration in the bloodstream, the possibility of being expelled from the brain, and low ability to penetrate the brain from the bloodstream. The researchers designed an ultra-small nanoparticle with large pores, enabling it to traverse the blood-brain barrier and reach the tumor to enhance the efficacy of the drug. In addition, this nanoparticle helps to minimize undesirable side effects experienced by patients. The delivery of the nanoparticle was tested on 3D spheroids, which are structures consisting of multiple cells created to mimic the responses and interactions of brain tumor cells. The results of the study demonstrated that the nanoparticles accumulated in the brain of mice within a few hours, without causing any adverse effects on vital organs. This groundbreaking drug delivery system holds promise for enhancing brain cancer treatment effectiveness and potentially paving the way for improved therapies for cancer treatment.
Furthermore, technological advancement in nanotechnology, and presence of nanotechnology drug delivery industry plays a crucial role in driving the nanotechnology drug delivery market forward. Nanotechnology has paved the way for groundbreaking advancements in the healthcare field. Nanotechnology has the potential to completely transform various aspects of medical care by manipulating matter at the atomic level This includes areas such as diagnostics, disease monitoring, surgical instruments, regenerative medicine, vaccine development, and drug delivery. For instance, a collaborative effort between Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) engineers and scientists from Novo Nordisk has resulted in the creation of an innovative drug capsule. This capsule is capable of carrying insulin or other protein drugs, safeguarding them from the harsh conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. The capsule disintegrates, upon reaching the small intestine, revealing dissolvable microneedles. These microneedles then attach to the intestinal wall and gradually release the drug, allowing for absorption into the bloodstream.
Thus, the nanotechnology drug delivery market trends include the advancement in technology, owing to the fact that nanotechnology have revolutionized the drug delivery, providing tools and methods to overcome many of the limitations associated with traditional drug delivery systems. However, manufacturing complexities might act as a restraint for the growth of the market. On the other hand, government initiatives promoting the R&D in nanotechnology applications in healthcare present significant growth opportunities in the nanotechnology drug delivery market.
On the basis of formulation, the nanotechnology drug delivery market size is classified into lipid-based nanomedicine, polymer-based nanomedicine, nanocrystals and others. The others include inorganic nanoparticles, protein-based nanoparticles, and micelles. The Polymer-based nanomedicine segment was the largest revenue contributor to the market in 2022, owing to versatility of polymer-based nanomedicine in terms of formulation design and drug delivery strategies. However, Lipid-based nanomedicine is expected to register fastest growth during the nanotechnology drug delivery market forecast period. This is attributed to high biocompatibility and non-toxicity of lipid-based nanomedicines.
On the basis of applications, the market is classified into oncology & hematology, infectious diseases, orthopedics, neurology, urology, immunology, and others. The others include gastrointestinal, inflammatory, endocrine, integumentary ophthalmology, and cardiology. The oncology & hematology segment was the highest revenue contributor to the market in 2022 owing to high R&D activities to explore the applications of nanotechnology for cancer treatment. However, neurology is expected to register the fastest growth during the forecasted period owing to, the ability of nanomedicines to effectively increase the drug absorption in the brain and increase the therapeutic efficacy of the drug
On the basis of region, North America has the highest nanotechnology drug delivery market share in 2022, and is expected to maintain its lead during the forecast period, owing to advancement in technology in healthcare sector, and rise in prevalence of chronic disease and strong presence of nanotechnology drug delivery industry in this region. However, Asia-Pacific is expected to exhibit fastest growth during the forecast period, owing to favorable government initiatives such as funding for research activities, and high presence of high-tech research institutes.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the nanotechnology drug delivery market share. Nanotechnology drug delivery market analysis for pandemic include advancements in innovative therapies and treatments. However, in the post pandemic phase, the market experienced a more growth due to resuming of research activities in other healthcare applications beside of COVID 19 vaccine.
