Microcarriers are used as structures which are supportive of the cell growth and expansion. Microcarriers are usually made of synthetic materials like plastic, dextran, and glass. Microcarriers are usually not toxic and very finely particulate in nature. They are also made by using natural materials which include gelatin, cellulose, and collagen. Microcarriers are used to reinforce the blocks in the bioprinting process.

Microcarriers have a specific shape and are interconnected by pores in a spherical shape which helps the cells in the growth and the attachment on the surface. Microcarriers provide an extensive monolayer habitat. Transfer of gases and nutrients betwixt the cells and the media are very efficient as compares to the 2D culture. Microcarriers are used in Extrusion Based Bioprinting(EBB) which helps in the loading of microcarriers and is also bioprinted in hydrogels.

Microcarriers are usually grown in protein-generating adherent and virus-producing cell populations during the process of production of vaccines on a large scale.

COVID-19 scenario analysis:

Pharmaceutical and biotech companies together with governments around the globe are working to address the COVID-19 outbreak, from supporting the development of vaccines to planning for medicines supply chain challenges. Currently, around 115 vaccine candidates and 155 molecules are in the R&D pipeline. Moreover, commonly used drugs such as Hydroxychloroquine have witnessed a dramatic surge in demand for the management of COVID-19. Such high demand for these drugs has presented huge opportunities for manufacturers of COVID-19 management drugs, as many developed countries are short of these drugs. Owing to the demand for vaccine and treatment drugs for COVID-19, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry is expected to witness a significant growth in the future.

Owing to such factors, COVID 19 is expected to have a significant impact on the Microcarrier market.

Top impacting factors: Market Scenario Analysis, Trends, Drivers and Impact Analysis:

The demand for vaccines which are based on the cells are growing, technologies are upgrading, and the funding from the private and public companies for cell-based research is boosting the market of Microcarriers.

Cell cultures are also growing due to their important role in the vaccine production process. Cell-based vaccines emerged as a far more efficient method as compared to others due to their shortened lead-time and the capability to produce vaccines in larger quantities as per demand. Clinical trials proved that cell-based vaccines are effective, efficacious, and safe as other cell-based vaccines.

The manufacturers have been trying to increase their capacity to enhance their vaccines by increasing the yield of the production, which is helping in production cost reduction. These have resulted in the vaccines getting available all over the globe.

On the other hand, microcarriers involve various R & D on any new therapies coming up and are highly expensive. Small-scale companies and academic institutes have very limited budgets and they can’t always afford the research. Moreover, microcarriers are always stuck to the cells, and as the cells have to be harvested via the downstreaming process which is very expensive. These are the biggest challenges faced by the microcarrier market and are hampering the growth.

New product launches and acquisitions to flourish the market:

On March 3rd, 2018, ABL Europe and Sartorius signed an agreement which helped while building their manufacturing capacity facility in Strasbourg.

On March 28th, 2018, Corning developed its dissolvable Microcarriers.

On January 24th, 2018, Clover Biopharmaceuticals won over GE’s FlexFactory biomanufacturing platform and turned it to their production facility in China.

On February 7th, 2018, Sartorius introduced a Mini Microcarrier Bioreactor Vessel.

Surge in usage in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology companies applications:

Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Companies, Research Institutes, and CROs research are the major consumers of the Microcarriers market. Microcarriers are utilized in various research institutes to help in the management of patient health. Innovation, discovery, and development in the microcarriers segment which are helping in making the patient management more efficient is creating a demand for microcarriers.
