Out-of-band authentication is a two-factor authentication process, which requires a secondary verification method through a separate communication channel along with the typical ID and password. It is often used in banking and financial institutions as well as in other organizations with high security requirements. The use of out-of-band authenticators makes hacking an account more difficult, as two separate and unconnected authentication channels would have to be hacked for an attacker to gain access.
