Viral vector is a tool that molecular biologists use to deliver genetic material into cells. This process is performed using viruses as vectors of the genetic material to be transferred into host cells. The delivery of genes by a vector is called transduction while the host cells are called transduced after an infection by viral vectors. Viral vector purification is the process by which viral particles are isolated from the host cell in which it has grown. This is done after the process of gene delivery in the host cell has occurred. The common methods of viral vector purification are chromatography and centrifugation.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

COVID-19 is an infectious disease that originated in the Hubei province of the Wuhan city in China in late December. The highly contagious disease, caused by a virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is transmitted from human to human. Since the outbreak in December 2019, the disease has spread to almost 213 countries around the globe with the World Health Organization declaring it a public health emergency on March 11, 2020.

Pharmaceutical and biotech companies together with governments around the globe are working to address the COVID-19 outbreak, from supporting the development of vaccines to planning for medicine supply chain challenges. Currently, around 115 vaccine candidates and 155 molecules are in the R&D pipeline. Moreover, commonly used drugs such as Hydroxychloroquine have witnessed a dramatic surge in demand for the management of COVID-19. Such high demand for these drugs has presented huge opportunities for manufacturers of COVID-19 management drugs, as many developed countries are facing a shortage of these drugs. Thus, the biotechnology industry is expected to witness significant growth in the future, owing to the demand for vaccine and treatment drugs for COVID-19. This, in turn, is expected to have a significant impact on the viral vector purification market, as viral vectors find applications in vaccine manufacturing.

Top Impacting Factors

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has boosted the demand for the development of viral vector vaccines. Since viral vectors are required in such procedures this factor has helped boost the market of viral vector purification.

In addition, rising number of infectious diseases can affect humans in the future, which is a key factor that has helped experts project the use of viral vectors in vaccine manufacturing over the coming decade.

The number of biotechnology companies is increasing all over the world. Since there are immense applications of viral vectors in the biotechnology industry, this factor is leading to the growth of the viral vector purification market.

However, dearth of skilled personnel trained in using and handling viral vectors is a factor that could impede the viral vector purification market growth during the forecast period.

Key Market Trends

By end user, the research institutes segment is projected to dominate the market, due to increased initiatives by government bodies and various healthcare organizations to encourage research activities related to viral vectors.

The North American market for viral vector purification is expected to hold a major share during the forecast period, due to high adoption of viral vector purification methods and an enormous presence of key players in this region.

Europe is expected to grow at a significant rate, due to increasing expenditure on research regarding the applications of viral vectors and increasing advancement in developing methods for viral vector purification.

The demand for viral vector purification in Asia-Pacific is increasing, as nations such as Japan are focusing on developing viral vector products for the treatments and prevention of infectious diseases.
