Acute care needleless connectors are referred to as devices that are connected to the terminal of the vascular catheters or syringes and help the catheter to access in the infusion and also the aspiration. These devices are mainly used for connecting indwelling needles, central venous catheters, and other vascular accesses to ensure the confined and unobstructed venous infusion circuit. Also, they provide the advantage of non-obstructiveness in the process. The acute care needleless connectors are classified on the basis of their internal mechanism and type of function. On the basis of their internal mechanism, the acute care needleless connectors are classified as simple and complex connectors. Simple needleless connectors are less expensive and have fewer parts as compared to complex needleless connectors. Additionally, simple connectors do not have internal mechanical valves whereas complex connectors do have internal mechanical valves that allow non-straight fluid pathways. Moreover, on the basis of type of functions, the acute care needless connectors are classified as positive displacement, negative displacement and neutral displacement connectors. These devices are made up of wide variety of plastics, silicon or stainless steel. Plastic is the most common material used for the manufacture of these devices. It’s because the plastic is lightweight, waterproof, easily moldable, resistant to various chemicals, and it can also be colorized. There are several types of connectors available today for protecting against the catheter associated bloodstream infections and enhance the patient outcomes

COVID-19 Scenario Analysis:
To take care of infected population the demand for medical supplies is increasing. Respiratory support devices such as atomizer, life-support machine, oxygen generator, and monitor are among the majorly used medical devices in primary clinical treatment. Moreover, COVID-19 has led to a huge surge in demand for medical supplies such as personal protective equipment including masks, gloves, and protective eyeglasses. With rise in number of COVID-19 cases worldwide, the need for medical supplies keeps on rising among, both healthcare professionals and civil population for precautionary measures. Manufacturers of these products have a chance to capitalize this increased demand of medical supplies to ensure adequate and continuous supply of personal protective equipment in the market.
Increase in demand for efficient and effective intravenous blood withdrawal and drug administration techniques are expected to boost acute care needleless connectors market. Furthermore, needleless connector reduces the risk of needlestick injuries to the healthcare practitioners, which may give rise to blood borne diseases. Needleless connectors find their applications in various intravenous medicine administrations and blood withdrawal, which is necessary during the treatment course such as acute care hospitals. In addition, there is a risk of (Catheter-related bloodstream infections) CRBSI, the manufacturers are highlighting on product design modernization and development of novel connectors, which are capable of minimizing the risk of CRBSI.
However, the lack of the awareness among the practitioners regarding the importance and advantages of the connector devices is expected to hamper the growth of the market.
In September 2020, the FDA 510(k) clearance for the MaxZero Extension Sets with Needle-Free Connector was received by the Carefusion, Inc.
In March 2017, the FDA 510(k) clearance for the BD Nexiva Closed IV Catheter System-Single Port with MaxZero Needleless Connector was received by the Becton Dickinson Infusion Therapy Solutions, Inc.
The increase in the prevalence of the catheter-based injuries and needlestick injuries is helping the devices to boost its usage. The new developments in the devices are also responsible for surge in usage of the devices in the hospital sectors.
