An anal fistula is a small tunnel that connects an abscess, an infected cavity in the anus, to an opening on the skin around the anus. They are usually the result of an infection near the anus, which causes a collection of pus (abscess) in the nearby tissue. Even after the pus drains away, a small channel is left behind. Anal fistulas can cause unpleasant symptoms, such as discomfort, skin irritation, and most of the time they do not get better on their own. Surgery is recommended in most of the cases.
Symptoms include pain, swelling, and discharge of blood or pus from the anus. People may experience pain areas in the rectum, discharge or bleeding from anus, and perianal swelling is also common. An anal fistula usually develops after an anal abscess (a collection of pus) bursts, or when an abscess has not been completely treated. A fistula can even be caused by conditions that affect the intestines, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or diverticulitis.

Market Trends
A study conducted at the Hospital Santa Izabel, Brazil, published in ARQUIVOS BRASILEIROS DE CIRURGIA DIGESTIVA in 2014, stated that video-assisted fistulotomy proved to be safe and effective in the treatment of anal fistula. This procedure helped directly visualize the internal openings, allowing surgeons to operate without any risk of mistakes. Such technological advancements are projected to augment the anal fistula treatment market.
Increased preference of surgeries for treatment to boost demand in the market
Efforts to ensure good quality of life and low rate of recurrence are expected to drive the demand for surgical treatment. Surgical treatment is highly dependent on the position of fistula. Surgeries are dependent on whether the fistula is branched off or is a single channel. Various surgical procedures comprise seton techniques, advancement flap procedures, bioprosthetic plugs, and fistulotomy. In addition, it comprises new techniques, such as FiLaC therapy, and LIFT therapy. Fistulotomy is the most common type of surgery of anal fistulas.
