The adoption of antibacterial coatings is expected to increase for various applications or types of implants such as orthopedic implants, cardiac implants, dentistry, and others. These coatings provide complete coverage of implant’s surface, thereby lowering the impact of bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. In addition, they inhibit the growth of any microbes on the surface and nearby tissues, thus preventing the occurrence of bacterial infections. During implantation surgeries, introduction of metals, nanocrystals, organic compounds, and polymers into the coatings improves the receptiveness of biological tissues and fluids to accept the implantable device and consecutively prohibits microbial spread.

The use of medical implants is highest in North America, owing to heavy expenditure by the government on healthcare and supportive reimbursement policies, followed by Europe and Asia-Pacific.
