Bronopol is an organic compound is used for antimicrobial purposes. Bronopol is produced by bromination of dinitromethane, which is derived from nitroaldol reaction. Earlier it was used as a preservative in the pharmaceutical industry. Bronopol appears as white in color, when in solid form and yellow when formed into a solution. It is easily soluble in water and has very high activity in neutralizing negative effects of bacteria (especially gram-negative species), hence it is widely used in pharmaceutical industries. It is also supplied either in crystal or powdered form for various purposes. It has a superior preservative property that makes it suitable to be used in different consumer-based products such as shampoos, soaps, and cosmetics. Sometimes its use in cosmetic products form nitrosamine, which is harmful for skin. Hence, nitrosamine inhibitors are used along with bronopol for manufacturing several cosmetic based products. Its antimicrobial properties make it suitable for be used as antimicrobial agents for different industries such as petrochemicals, water disinfecting plants, paper mills, sugar mills, and many more. Melting point of bronopol ranges from 140–160 degrees Celsius. It undergoes a lattice structure at temperatures ranging from 100–150 degrees Celsius. It also acts as a major corrosion preventive material, which is caused due to bacterial contamination in hydro-fracturing purposes. It decomposes into aqueous solutions when mixed with highly alkaline solutions and produces formaldehyde as a byproduct.
