The global dialysis concentrate market was valued at $2,692.6 million in 2020 and is projected to reach $4,531.5 million by 2030, registering a CAGR of 5.40% from 2021 to 2030. Dialysis concentrate consists of purified water, glucose, and electrolytes, which are used in hemodialysis where the solution is prepared according to the need that helps to regulate electrolyte and remove metabolic waste products. The dialysis concentrate used in dialysis procedure is prepared as per patient requirements, which aids in regulating the electrolyte and maintaining an acid-base balance to facilitate the procedure of removal of metabolic excretes from the body.

Surge in incidences of kidney diseases, issues associated with kidney transplants, and rise in prevalence of lifestyle and chronic diseases are some principles factors, which drive the growth of the dialysis concentrate market. However, complications in dialysis treatment and reimbursement policy concerns in emerging nations may hinder the growth of the dialysis concentrate market. On the contrary, shift in preference of patients for home hemodialysis creates an opportunity for the manufacturers to tap and capitalize on the market.

Dialysis-Concentrate-Market-2021-2030

The outbreak of COVID-19 has disrupted workflows in the healthcare sector around the world. The disease has forced a number of industries to shut their doors temporarily, including several sub-domains of health care, and thus, there has been an increase in mortality rate among dialysis patients during COVID-19.

In February, 2021, according to a Canadian study published in Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ), patients on long-term dialysis were more than five times likely to be infected with COVID-19 and almost four times more likely to die than the general population. In addition, the concern for the transmission of infectious disease during dialysis procedure is high, which negatively impacted the dialysis concentrate market growth. The survey was conducted in 19 major hospitals in India (8 in the public and 11 in the private sector) to determine the effect of lockdown on the care of patients with kidney disease, including those on dialysis after the first 3 weeks of lockdown.

Thus, according to this survey, the number of dialysis patients at these centers decreased from 2,517 to 2,404 from 2019 to 2020. Out of 2,517 patients, around 710 patients (28%) missed one or more dialysis sessions, 69 (3%) needed emergency dialysis, 104 (4%) stopped reporting, and 9 (0.36%) died.

Dialysis Concentrate Segmentation

The global dialysis concentrate market is segmented on the basis of type, application, dialysis site, and region to provide a detailed assessment of the market. By type, it is divided into acid concentrates, bicarbonate concentrates, and peritoneal dialysis fluid. By application, it is bifurcated into hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Based on dialysis site, it is categorized into hospital, clinics & dialysis centers, and home dialysis. Region-wise, the market is analyzed across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.

Segment Review

Based on type, the market is segmented into acid concentrates, bicarbonate concentrates, and peritoneal dialysis fluid. The acid concentrates segment dominated the global market in 2020 and expected to remain dominant during the forecast period, owing to factors such as increase in adoption of acid concentrate in the treatment of acute and chronic renal failure during hemodialysis.

Acid Concentrates segment holds a dominant position in 2020 and would continue to maintain the lead over the forecast period.

Based on application, it is bifurcated into hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The hemodialysis segment dominated the global market in 2020 and is anticipated to continue this trend during the forecast period. This is attributed to increase in geriatric population and incidences of renal diseases, especially end stage renal disease (ESRD) globally as well as rise in incidences of diabetes and hypertension and shortage of kidneys for transplantation, which increase the use of hemodialysis and hemodialysis concentrate.

Based on dialysis site, it is classified into hospital, clinics & dialysis centers, and home dialysis. Clinics & dialysis centers held the largest market share in 2020 and is expected to remain dominant during the forecast period, owing to advantages of in-center dialysis such as patients do not require any medical training as healthcare professionals carry out majority of tasks making it convenient for patients by avoiding any errors during the treatment.

Analyst Review

Dialysis concentration is used in hemodialysis where the solution is prepared according to the need that helps to regulate electrolyte and remove metabolic waste products. Dialysis fluid in the treatment of dialysis consists of purified water, glucose, and electrolytes.

Increase in patients suffering from heart or liver disease for kidney transplantation, rise in incidences of kidney failures, growth in number of ESRD patients, increase in occurrences of diabetes, and lack of matching donors for kidney transplantation are expected to propel the growth of the dialysis concentrate market during the forecast period. Moreover, shift in preference of patients toward home hemodialysis (HHD), owing to its effective and patient-centered approach are expected to offer profitable opportunities for the growth of the market during the forecast period. However, lack of awareness about kidney diseases, complications associated with hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatments, and reduction in reimbursements for dialysis across developing nations are expected to hamper the market growth.

The acid concentrate segment is expected to remain dominant during the forecast period, owing to increase in adoption of acid concentrate in the treatment of acute and chronic renal failure during hemodialysis. Moreover, Asia-Pacific is expected to offer lucrative opportunities to the market during the forecast period due to increase in cases of ESRD, CKDs, diabetes, and hypertension coupled with surge in diagnosis rates in Asia-Pacific. In addition, increase in number of HD and PD procedures in emerging economies, such as India and China, is the major factor that boosts the market growth in the region.
