Diamond coating is a method of depositing a uniform layer of diamond on materials such as glass, plastics, metals, ceramics, and composites. The coating is achieved through the use of a carbon feed gas, primarily methane diluted by hydrogen to about 1-2 mol percent, which is passed into the chamber and exposed to a combination of lasers via various technologies. Diamond particles bond to the surface of a material or substrate due to the extreme temperature and pressure. Substrates are coated with diamond to improve their wear resistance, hardness, and corrosion resistance and other features. Diamond coatings have grown in popularity as a result of their mechanical, electrical, and optical properties. High thermal conductivity, low coefficient of friction, maximum surface hardness, and exceptional wear properties are just a few of the many advantages. Diamond coatings are an excellent solution for a wide variety of surface performance issues.

COVID-19 Impact analysis

  • COVID-19 had a negative impact on the market in 2020. Due to the pandemic scenario, several countries were forced to go into lockdown, which resulted in the shutdown of manufacturing facilities in almost every industry worldwide for a set period of time. The electronics industry, which is a major consumer of diamond coating, was severely impacted.
  • Electronic production was halted as a result of the pandemic due to a logistical slowdown and a lack of workforce availability around the world. Furthermore, supply chain disruptions caused additional shipment delays for electronics manufacturers, affecting the market.
  • Manufacturing of various consumer goods and other products has come to a halt around the world due to a lack of raw materials, a labor shortage, and other factors. This is expected to have a negative impact on the diamond coatings market.

Top Impacting factors

The growing demand for diamond-coated medical devices, metal cutting tools, mechanical, and electronic equipment is driving the diamond coatings market. Diamond is an ideal element due to its high hardness and strength, as well as its low friction coefficient and chemical stability. Diamond coatings are obtained using advanced surface engineering techniques such as CVD and PVD and are increasingly investigated in cutting tool applications. Diamond tools have great potential in many machining applications. Useful for making complex shaped cutting tools such as drill bits. The use of diamond coating has extended the life of tools and equipment. This has increased the use of components that are lightweight, durable and of great interest to the end user. Diamond coating process requires a large capital investment. The treatment technologies are capital intensive and the equipment used in these coating technologies requires special operating conditions such as high temperatures and controlled vacuums. This limits the diamond coating market.

Market Trends

Acquisition

  • John Crane announced in April 2019 that it had completed the acquisition of Advanced Diamond Technologies (ADT), Industrial Division. ADT, headquartered in Romeoville, Illinois, is a pioneer in the development and application of diamond films for industrial, electronic, mechanical, and medical applications.
  • With the introduction of new technologies, the global electronics industry has been put under increased pressure to deliver better results every time. Materials that are strong and difficult to machine are used in new technologies such as 5G, the Internet of Things, and augmented virtual reality.
  • The electronics industry is constantly making remarkable progress and development, and demand for the market under consideration is rapidly increasing. Cell phones, portable computing devices, gaming systems, and other personal electronic devices will drive demand for semiconductors, capacitors, and other electronic components.
  • China is the world's leading producer of electronics. The country's electronics production, which had been steadily increasing over the years, has recently slowed due to the ongoing trade war between China and the U.S., forcing various electronics manufacturers to relocate their operations from China to other countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Nonetheless, the country continues to dominate the global market for electronics production.
  • Thailand is recognized as a major healthcare hub in Asia, and medical devices are found to be a thriving industry. Thailand, as an Asian leader, is found to play an important role in many regional and international organizations dedicated to promoting the advancement of medical devices in the field. The majority of medical devices manufactured in Thailand for export are single-use devices, accounting for approximately 84% of all medical supplies exported revenue.
