Ventilator is medical device used for passing breathable air in and out of the lungs. This is used to support breathing in patients who cannot breathe on their own or need some aid. This work by delivering a mixture of gases, especially oxygen, and air to the lungs of the patient with the help of a tube inserted in the patient's airways. In recent years, noninvasive methods consisting of a face or nasal mask connected to a ventilator have become more common. The amount of air passed, the pressure, and the timing can be adjusted according to the need of the patients. This is crucial in the treatment of patients with respiratory illnesses or respiratory failure. Various types of ventilator can be used for specific clinical situations.
The electronic ventilator market is driven by several factors. There has been an increase in the prevalence of respiratory diseases like COPD, asthma, and pneumonia all over the global. These conditions cause breathing problems which can be corrected with the help of ventilators. This can drive the market in upcoming years. The occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic and its long-term effect has also raised the demand for mechanical ventilators at global level. Along with this, there have been various expenditures and funding for improving the healthcare structure in developing countries that may drive this market. These investments have in turn led to the development of more advanced and efficient electronic ventilators, which are smaller, more portable, and offer a wider range of features.
Although the electronic ventilator market is expected to grow during the forecast period, it may also face some challenges. These mechanical devices may be expensive and thus not affordable to a large population. Countries with limited healthcare resources are also not able to access or maintain the latest trends in ventilators. The technological knowledge required to manufacture, run, and maintain these devices is very complex. It requires trained professionals to handle this machinery. The use of ventilators in neonates has caused lung injury and inflammation and is said to be one of the primary causes of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Also, many hospitals purchased ventilators during COVID-19 due to their high demand during that period. Hospitals will not be purchasing new ventilators in the upcoming years thus limiting the market growth.
Home-based treatment options are expected to provide lucrative opportunities for players to increase their market share in the electronic ventilator market. The high cost of healthcare facilities has resulted in the shift of patient interest from hospitals to home-based facilities. Various products such as nebulizers, continuous positive airway pressure devices, and ventilators can be used for monitoring and diagnostic purposes in home-based settings, thus saving costs. The rising prevalence of respiratory disorders especially in the Asia-Pacific region, and an increase in the geriatric population may also create new opportunities and increase the demand for electronic ventilators in the forecast period.
New product launches to flourish in the market.
In January 2021, a noninvasive airway pressure ventilator, called Swasth Vayu was introduced by CSIR-NAL. It has been approved by regulatory authorities and is currently being commercialized with six private companies. In August 2020, Spicjet introduced a new portable and noninvasive ventilator, called Spiceoxy. It is a cost-effective device and an efficient solution for patients with mild to moderate breathing issues.
Segment overview
By type: The electronic ventilator market is classified as nonInvasive ventilation and multimode ventilation. The noninvasive ventilation segment dominated the market in the last few years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. NonInvasive Ventilation consists of a face mask or a nasal mask connected to a ventilator that pumps air into the lungs. It is primarily used in the treatment of severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. Multimode ventilation is designed by combining various efficient single airflow patterns. The multimode ventilation segment is expected to grow during the forecast period.
By application: The electronic ventilator market is categorized into hospital, clinic, and other. The hospital application segment showed the highest growth due to an increase in demand for ventilators during the pandemic period. An increase in the number of ICU patients has also driven the market. But due to increasing healthcare expenses, patients are getting interested in home-based settings that are more convenient and cost-effective. So, this segment may fuel the growth of the market in the upcoming years.
By region: The electronic ventilator market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA. North America witnessed the highest market share in previous years and is expected to hold the position due to ever increasing number of patients admitted to hospitals. Followed by this, Europe is expected to witness second highest growth owing to the prevalence of respiratory diseases. Asia-Pacific region may also witness a large number of cases along with rising geriatric population, thus driving the market.
