Energy recovery ventilation (ERV) system is the process of exchanging energy where the ventilation units are enclosed. ERV systems treat and purify the entering outdoor ventilation air in residential and commercial HVAC systems. They are found in a variety of sectors, including factories, residences, and workplaces. They help to improve the indoor air quality and reduce the total HVAC equipment capacity. These systems further fulfil the requirements of ASHRAE ventilation and energy standards, which are set by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Building operators are encouraged to increase the volume of outside ventilation air and enhance the quality of indoor air by using ERV systems.

Market Scope and Structure Analysis

Description

According to type, the ERV systems market is are segmented into pipe heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers, run-around coils, and rotary heat exchangers. Plate heat exchange offers high efficiency in terms of heat transfer. It has a compact design and costs less to maintain. These ERV systems ensure maximum energy savings and are designed to supply fresh air by improving indoor air quality. They are used in highly populated places such as auditoriums, fitness centers, churches, schools, and offices. They improve the humidity control by pre-drying the air coming from ventilation. ERV systems reduce the electricity bill as less power is required to improve the indoor air quality.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

  • The COVID-19 pandemic ceased the production of various products in the energy recovery ventilation systems industry, which is attributed to the global lockdown. This hampered the growth of energy recovery ventilation systems market from the last few months and is likely to continue during 2022.
  • COVID-19 affected the sales of energy recovery ventilation systems in the end quarter of 2021 and is anticipated to have a negative impact on the market growth throughout the year.
  • The major demand for energy recovery ventilation systems was previously noticed in giant manufacturing regions, such as North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA, which are negatively affected by the spread of the coronavirus, thereby declining the demand for ERV systems.
  • Further, potential impact of the lockdown is currently vague and financial recovery of companies is totally based on their cash reserves. Energy recovery ventilation systems manufacturers can afford a full lockdown only for a few months, after which the players have to modify their investment plans. For instance, various players in the market halted their production activities for several weeks to reduce their expenses. On the contrary, few players adopted employee lay-offs to sustain themselves during the COVID-19 health crisis.
  • Energy recovery ventilation systems manufacturers are expected to focus on protecting their workforce, operations, and supply chains to respond to immediate crises and find new ways of working after COVID-19. For instance, provision of sanitizers, maintaining social distancing, as well as ensuring the vaccination of every employee in the company can assist in promoting the health & safety of the workforce.

Top Impacting Factors

The demand for ERV systems is increasing due to rise in urbanization, which is helping to keep the need for energy recovery ventilators going strong. Furthermore, implementation and execution of various government regulations regarding the use of energy recovery ventilators to furnish existing buildings, as well as the incorporation of eco-friendly buildings, leading to increased investment in the construction sector, are expected to propel the market for energy recovery ventilators over the projected period. ERV systems are cost-effective, and require fewer installation and maintenance costs. Furthermore, to provide optimum ventilation, ERV systems are efficiently installed into the pre-designed ductwork of a building under construction.

Similarly, advancement in technology such as improvement in heat recovery technology is the main factor that drives the global ERV systems market growth. Hence, manufacturers are embracing new technologies to keep up with technological advancements. They are focusing on improving indoor air quality and providing fresh air circulation in enclosed spaces.

  • In February 2021, Mitsubishi Electric Company introduced Lossnay ventilation system for better indoor air quality. It is a complete heat exchanger ventilation system that uses paper technology to adjust temperature and humidity. It maintains temperature and humidity by drawing fresh air from outside. It is backed up by an energy efficient air conditioning system that provides fresh air after proper filtration.
  •
  • In May 2020, Fujitsu General Limited introduced its commercial energy recovery systems in Europe. It has introduced 15 new models in the AIRSTAGE J Series for small and medium-sized shops and offices and five new models in V Series for larger residential and commercial buildings.
  • In March 2020, Nortek Air Solutions, a manufacturer of HVAC equipment, donated eight custom Temtrol HVAC units to Construction Science Building in Texas. It offered six indoor air recovery ventilation systems and two rooftop DOAS systems. The Fanwall air handler technology and DOAS total energy wheel is expected to contribute to Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design.
