Expanded graphite is a form of intercalated graphite, usually known as extensible flake, or intumescent flake graphite, that expands when heated. Expanded graphite is created by processing crumb graphite with different intercalation solvents such as acids, which are free to migrate in the presence of heat between the graphite layers. When crumb graphite, after the intercalation process, is exposed to hot weather conditions, the intercalation substances disintegrate into gaseous products, which exert pressure between the graphene layers. This extreme pressure produces sufficient force that forces the graphite planes apart. This results in an improvement in the volume of graphite and surface area, which further decreases the graphite unit weight. In addition, the coarser flake graphite exhibits flexural strength relatively higher than the tiny flake graphite, and not all graphite is extensible.
