Pentane is a straight chain organic alkane compound with molecular formula C5H12. It is a colorless chemical compound and has petroleum odor. N-pentane, iso pentane, and cyclo pentane are the three isomers available in the market.

Insulation boards made up of polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polyurethane (PU), and polyisocyanurate (PIR) have gained importance in the construction industry. Several manufacturing processes and blowing & foaming agents are used during production of insulation boards. However, selection of proper production process and blowing agents are utmost important ecological and economic factors. Sustainability and high-performance characteristics of pentane make it a widely preferred foaming agent during production of insulation boards. Thus, use of pentane for producing insulation boards drives the growth of the market.

Growth in demand for pentane across insulation industry drives the demand of India pentane market

Pentanes are used as key blowing agents during formulation of insulation materials. For instance, cyclopentane are capable of improving heat insulating effect, thus cyclopentane are widely used as blowing agents during production of polyurethane foam insulation products. Insulation industry is a vital industry that determines energy transition and helps in achieving climate neutral characteristics. Pentanes are considered as vital and fundamental compounds that tend to increase the insulation characteristics of modern insulation materials. Thus, use of pentane as blowing agent tends to support the eco-friendly climate goals. Eco-balance characteristics, minimal global warming potential (GWP), and zero ozone depletion potential of pentanes make them ideal blowing agent in insulation industry. Several regulatory bodies have approved the use of pentane blowing agents as they comply with worldwide regulations implemented to protect stratospheric ozone layer. In addition, ban on use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydro-fluorocarbons (HFCs) has escalated the demand for pentane blowing agents. The major use of pentane as blowing agent is in polyurethane (PU), expanded polystyrene, and extruded polystyrene insulation material production.

Different isomer blends are used and the isomer blend ratio depends upon the required insulating property and dimensional stability of the insulating foam products. Thin PU foam with high insulating capability can be formulated using cyclopentane blowing agent. Cyclopentane tend to remain partially in the insulation cells in form of cell gas. This partial remains of cell gas tend has low heat conductivity that in turn tend to increase the insulating property of PU foam. Thus, high insulation property can be achieved with thin layer of PU foam that in turn increases the flexibility of PU insulation foam across construction industry.

However, acute inhalation of n-pentane cause dizziness and drowsiness. In addition, ingestion of other pentane isomers such as cyclo pentane and iso pentane tend to result in nausea, vomiting, and dizziness hampers the market growth.

The PU grade segment dominated the India pentane market, and it is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 6.0% from 2022 to 2027. HCFC141b is another blowing agent used widely during formulation of rigid PU foam. However, due to strict key regulations over use of HCFC blowing agent owing to its adverse environmental impact has demanded the use of alternative blowing agents. Hence, the use of HCFC based blowing agent is slowly diminishing across rigid foam insulation production. Pentane are considered as the best alternative over HCFC owing to low cost and high thermal conductivity. For instance, the thermal conductivity of pentane-based blowing agents is 5- 10% higher as compared to HCFC blowing agents.

The India pentane market is segmented on the basis of isomer, type, grade, and region. By isomer, market is divided into n-pentane, iso pentane, and cyclo pentane. Sustainability and resource conservation has gained importance among consumers and manufacturing industries. Growing consumer preferences for energy efficient building insulation boards have augmented the growth of insulation materials. Insulation property of thermal boards depends upon thermal conductivity of blowing and foaming agent used during production. N-pentane is a widely used blowing agent in the production of common residential and commercial insulation boards owing to its low thermal conductivity and high insulation characteristics.

India pentane market, by type

Pentane blend segment was the highest revenue contributor to the market in 2021. Pentane blend is a mixture of n-pentane and iso pentane with certain ratio and this ratio is denoted by numbers such as 80/20, 60/40, and 50/50. Pentane 80/20 is a blend of 80% n-pentane and 20% iso pentane. 80/20 pentane blend is a fast-evaporating hydrocarbon containing low impurity level such as sulfur, olefin, benzene, and other aromatics.

India pentane market, by grade

Polyurethane (PU) grade was the highest revenue contributor and is anticipated grow ate fastest CAGR of 6.95 during the forecast period. Foam density is a crucial factor that determines insulation property of polyurethane foam. Use of low-density blowing agent maximizes insulation property of foam. Pentane foam density is 5% lower than HCFC, thus the demand of pentane as blowing agent is increasing for producing PU foam. All these factors are driving the demand of the market. Gas phase thermal conductivity is another considerable factor determining the rigidness and insulation property of PU foam. Low gas phase thermal conductivity of cyclopentane makes it viable to be used for producing rigid polyurethane foam products used across industrial insulation.

Polymer end-use industry is expected to drive the adoption of Pentane.

The novel coronavirus is an incomparable global pandemic that has spread to over 180 countries and caused huge losses of lives and the economy around the globe. The India pentane market has been moderately impacted due to the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, owing to its dependence on the petrochemical industry. Pentane is a straight chain alkane hydrocarbon compound that is majorly produced using naphtha or natural gas liquid. Growing demand for medical related plastics and other polymer products has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. This in turn has increased the demand and production of naphtha. In addition, coupled with growing medical plastics and equipment has surged across India. Naphtha is mainly derived from petrochemical products and emergence of COVID-19 has significantly reduced the demand for petrochemical production. For instance, according to report by Business Standard, the crude oil and natural gas production in India saw a negative impact. • The crude and natural gas production was dropped around 6% and 5% in the year 2019-2020 and 2018-2019. All these factors have negatively hampered the growth of India pentane market amid COVID-19 pandemic. However, the demand for naphtha is growing steadily in recent months owing to ease of countrywide lockdown. This in turn has escalated the growth of naphtha production across India. For instance, according to report by Petroleum Planning and Analysis, the naphtha demand across India reached 8.44 million mt and has demonstrated a 9.8% in January-July 2022.
