Segment Review

Infant phototherapy devices use different types of light sources for treatment of neonatal jaundice. These light sources are categorized as fluorescent lamps, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), quartz halogen lamps, and gas discharge tubes. Fluorescent lamps are long tubes and folded tubes, which emit white and blue light. They serve as a cost-effective option for use in phototherapy devices. However, the light intensity and irradiance of fluorescent tubes reduces with time. They work efficiently for 1,000‐2,000 hours of use, after which they are replaced. Conversely, the intensity of LEDs does not decrease with time, and they last at least 3,000 hours of use. In addition, they are comparatively less fragile, and do not produce high heat as their spectrum is concentrated in the blue region of the visible light.

Based on configuration, the infant phototherapy devices can be fixed or mobile. Mobile devices are convenient to use, as they are portable and can be shifted anywhere according to the need.
