Pigments are the materials used to impart various colors to the products by using their ability of changing the color of reflected or transmitted light as the result of wavelength-selective absorption. Inorganic pigments are metallic oxides or synthetics. These Mineral-earth type pigments are very simple and naturally occurring colored substances used for imparting colors in wide range of applications. Inorganic pigments are obtained from mixed metal oxides and are produced by a high temperature calcinations process. These pigments are not affected by strong acids, base and oxidizing agents. Also, inorganic pigments are non-migratory, do not bleed and are non-warping. Most inorganic pigments can withstand various temperatures and bad climatic conditions; they are heat resistant, have resistance to other chemicals and are easy to disperse. There are a variety of inorganic pigments available and are classified primarily from the source they are derived from. Some of the inorganic pigments include Chrome, which is derived from lead, Cadmium, which are derived from cadmium compounds, and Iron that are derived from various iron oxides among others.

Inorganic pigments are solid materials that obtain their transparency owing to their extremely small size and shape. Inorganic color pigments are used in various industries, which include coil coatings, powder coatings, industrial coatings, architectural coatings among others. They are also used in the coloring of plastics, buildings, constructions etc... It finds its application even in the automotive segments as a colorant for engineering plastics. Owing to the quality of industrial products, which have been improving over the past few years, the demands on their appearance and durability are increasing as well. Due to their fastness properties and their tolerance to adverse conditions, they are the most preferred pigments used in constructions. Inorganic pigments are the most stable class of pigments that have been manufactured as of today.  The main setbacks of the inorganic pigment industry are coping with continuous globalization, markets that are mature in a few applications and regions and the excess production of commodity pigments. The adverse environmental effects inorganic pigments cause can be a restrain for its market.

Covid-19 Impact Analysis

  • The coronavirus's unfavorable global effects are already evident, and they will have a big impact on the inorganic pigments in 2020.
  • The World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency after the COVID-19 virus outbreak in December 2019. The disease has spread to over 100 nations and resulted in massive deaths all across the world. Exports & Imports, global manufacturing, tourism, and financial sectors have all been heavily damaged.
  • The downward pressure on the global economy, which had previously shown signs of improvement, has escalated once more. The outbreak of the virus has added danger factors to the international economy's already sluggish development. Many international groups have stated that the global economy is experiencing its most difficult moment since the financial crisis.
  • The lockdown has resulted in hampering the imports and exports of various goods. Also, the uncertainty created in the market in the consumers’ buying pattern has resulted in hampering of the inorganic pigments.

Top Impacting Factors

Global inorganic pigments business is demanded to witness substantial growth in increasing application in the paint industries and construction. Urbanization and rapid extension in development activities pose critical drivers, and particularly in emerging economies. Inorganic color pigments are used in different enterprises, which are powder coatings, coil coatings, and architectural coatings. It is also used in the coloring of plastics, and constructions. It finds its purpose in the automotive segments as a colorant for engineering plastics. The value of industrial products, which has improved over the past few years, the demands on appearance and durability are increasing. Due to their rapidity characteristics and adaptability to conditions, they are the most preferred pigments used in construction.

Market trends

  • Growth in construction industry will accelerate the demand for the market
  • The global building & construction industry is growing rapidly owing to the increasing focus and investments in the construction sector. Inorganic pigments improve the quality of construction materials. In the building & construction industry, inorganic pigments are used in pavers, flooring, tiling, bridges, pipe & panels, and precast walls. All these activities help the market to grow.
  • Paints & coatings application industry will also accelerate the market growth.
  • The paints & coatings segment is projected to be the largest and the fastest-growing application during the forecast period. Increased performance of coated objects and technological advancements in coating technology are the key factors for growth of paints & coatings. Specialty pigments produce a range of colors with a brilliant luster. They have superior hiding energy and light fastness, which makes them ideal for high-performance paints and cosmetics. These pigments are ordinarily used to enhance the features, value, and condition of the product. The market in the plastics application is expected to grow at a significant rate during the forecast period.
  • Increasing usage as colorants in plastic industry will also accelerate the market growth
  • The production of plastics has been rising significantly across the globe, owing to the increase in demand for plastics in packaging, automotive, and building & construction industries. Unique and advantageous properties of plastics have enabled the material to be used as a substitute for wood, paper, and rubber. Inorganic pigments are widely employed in the production of polymers that are used in the manufacture of plastic products. An increase in plastic production is expected to drive the inorganic pigments market during the forecast period.
