The interspinous spacer Interspinous spacers, also known as interspinous process decompression systems, is a small graft that is used to relieve the painful symptoms of spinal stenosis, caused by a contraction of the spinal canal.  It is used as devices that implanted between vertebral spinous processes. These spacers are made up of a lightweight metal which is biocompatible in the human body. The main advantages of interspinous process implantation is that it can be performed with use of local anaesthesia with sedation, including relatively short operating time, and it can be performed in an outpatient setting. Interspinous spacer system, used for two major application such as Lumbar spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, compressing the nerves roaming through the lower back into the legs. It affect the younger patients, due to developmental causes, it is more often a degenerative condition that affects people who are typically age 60 and older. As an increasing geriatric population which is more susceptible to lumbar spinal stenosis, rises the demand for interspinous spacers is expected to increase in the future, which increases the growth of interspinous market growth over the time period. As per the United Nations report, Japan was the world’s most aged population in 2017 with 33% of the population aged 60 or over. Moreover, and it is projected to remain so through 2050 with 42% of its population aged 60. Previously a handful of interspinous spacers are available for implantation. The "X-STOP Interspinous Process Decompression System” is a device approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for implantation at one or two levels in patients with neurogenic claudication due to lumbar spinal stenosis. X-STOP device to be superior to conservative nonsurgical care for selected patients and it reduce pressure on the facet joints and improve overall canal dimensions.

COVID-19 Scenario Analysis:

To take care of infected population the demand for medical supplies is increasing. Respiratory support devices such as atomizer, life-support machine, oxygen generator, and monitor are among the majorly used medical devices in primary clinical treatment. Moreover, COVID-19 has led to a huge surge in demand for medical supplies such as personal protective equipment including masks, gloves, and protective eyeglasses. With rise in number of COVID-19 cases worldwide, the need for medical supplies keeps on rising among, both from healthcare professionals and civil population for precautionary measures. Manufacturers of these products have a chance to capitalize this increased demand of medical supplies to ensure adequate and continuous supply of personal protective equipment in the market.

The ongoing outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic impacted the medical device industry positively. As the COVID-19 virus outbreak in December 2019, the disease has spread to almost 100 countries across the globe with the “World Health Organization” announcing it a public health emergency. The global impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are already starting to be felt, and will significantly affect the interspinous spacer market in 2020. COVID-19 can affect the global economy in three main ways by directly affecting production and demand, by creating supply chain and market disruption, and by its financial impact on firms and financial markets.

Top impacting factors: Market Scenario Analysis, Trends, Drivers and Impact Analysis:

Globally, North America, hold the largest market share and dominate overall interspinous spacer market. This attributed to the factor such increasing geriatric population with degenerative disc disorders and lumbar spinal stenosis, presence of major market player available in the region rising demand for minimally invasive surgical procedures, increasing number of new product launches. However, Europe hold the second largest market share for interspinous spacers due to the increasing number of geriatric population with spine disabilities, presence of favorable regulatory bodies and compensation policies, and significant products approval. Whereas Asia Pacific expected to drive the market growth rate owing to increase in the geriatric population rising incidence of lumbar spinal stenosis & degenerative disc diseases, rising investment in healthcare sector, increasing in per capita income, improving health care infrastructure and growing health care expenditure.

According to the United Nations, lumbar spinal stenosis is a leading factor for the geriatric population choosing for spine surgeries in the U.S., and also reported that the global geriatric population is expected to reach 2.1 billion, triple by 2050. “American Association of Neurological Surgeons”, in 2017 in the US, every 6 elderly patients treated with lumbar spinal stenosis underwent reoperation on the spine within two years of surgery and nearly 1 in every 4 patients was readmitted for a surgery-related complication. In 2017 AMJ “journal” reported that around 200,000 adults in the U.S. are affected by lumbar spinal stenosis and favorable reimbursement policies for interspinous spacers have enabled patients to choose for this treatment.

The factor that majorly drive the growth of interspinous spacer market such as rising geriatric population with spine surgeries, rising demand for minimally invasive surgeries, increasing adoption rate of minimally invasive surgeries, rising number of product approvals from regulatory agencies, growing technological advancements, presence of favourable compensation policies, increasing awareness among the population regarding interspinous spacers However, the factors such as complications related with lumbar spinal fusion in older patients with spinal stenosis is restraining the growth of interspinous spacers market.

New Product launch to flourish the market:

Major Key market manufacturer have been focusing on increasing research and development activities and producing new product solution for specific applications as there are varying demands based on the utilization. Leading market players have determined how improved accuracy can be influential in many applications. “The American Medical Association’s Current Procedural Terminology (AMA CPT Panel) Panel”, in January 1, 2017, approved the addition of category I CPT codes for interspinous spacers. The new category I code replaced the existing category III CPT codes.

In 2015, VertiFlex Inc., received the approval from U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for “Superion InterSpinous Spacer”  is used to treat skeletally mature patients suffering from pain, numbness, and/or cramping in the legs (neurogenic intermittent claudication) secondary to a diagnosis of moderate lumbar spinal stenosis, with or without Grade 1 spondylolisthesis,

In 2018, “Paradigm Spine”, announced the issuance of a broad coverage medical policy from “BlueCross BlueShield” covering its coflex device for the surgical treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis.

In 2018, “NuVasive Inc” has launched “NuVasive® Spinous Process Plate System” is a posterior, non-pedicle supplemental fixation device, which is used in the non-cervical spine (T1 – S1)

In 2018, “Zimmer Biomet” has introduce new system in the market such as “Alpine XC Adjustable Fusion System” which provides in situ compression/distraction capabilities related to pedicle screws. This system allow patient with Adjustable sizing which optimized anatomical fit. It reduces time, risks and muscle trauma associated with screw placement. The only spinous process fixation device on the market that features titanium plasma spray coating specifically designed to improve fixation at the bone-implant interface

In 2019, “Medtronic” has launched new Interspinous system such as “DIAM Spinal Stabilization System” is designed for skeletally mature patients that have moderate low back pain with or without radicular pain with current episode lasting less than one year in duration secondary to lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD) at a single symptomatic level from L2-L5

In 2019, “Johnson & Johnson” has launched ACIS® Anterior Cervical Interbody Spacer is designed to meet the specific demands of anterior cervical interbody fusion procedures. The ACIS system features a large central canal to accommodate bone graft.
