MEMS Microphone is a solid-state IC that comprises pressure-sensitive diaphragm embedded on a semiconductor that can be incorporated directly on to an electronic chip along with a small, thin membrane fabricated on the chip to detect sound. It is actually composed of a diaphragm vibrating between two holed black plates and works as audio sensor to support voice activation and provide high quality audio. This device is widely used in consumer electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, smart speakers, music recorders, owing to their compact size, small form factor as well as its ability to eliminate sound damping by cancelling any unwanted background noise.Â
MEM microphones can provide high quality audio recording, voice calls over mobiles as well as can withstand high temperature supported by low power consumption. In addition, these are largely incorporated in 3D cameras, anti-theft systems, radars for security and surveillance as they are highly sensitive to frequency changes, which contributes to their steady performance.Â
Piezoelectric technology-based microphones are used in car infotainment system, loudspeakers, television broadcasting as they are less susceptible to deterioration after long periods, offer fast pick-up time, owing to lack of sensitivity to dust, moisture, or other environmental disturbances. Enhancement of overall acoustic impact facilitating wind noise filtering, beam steering, 3D sound accompanied by integration of virtual reality boosts growth of the MEMS microphone market share.
Covid-19 Scenario Analysis:
Surge in demand for hearing-aids featuring high quality microphones for growth in ageing population with hearing impairment as well as increase in adoption of tablets, smartphones, camcorders, and headphones primarily fuels the market growth. However, inefficient quality of voice, especially in noisy environment as well as large in size higher-SNR MEMS microphones for smartphones restrain the MEMS microphone market growth.
On the other hand, installation of MEMS microphone in IoT-enabled smart devices such as Amazon Echo Dot that operate on speech voice recognition commands boosts the market revenue. Compact size and extensive development in acoustic properties over conventional microphone has MEMS microphone to be used for information sharing applications via FaceTime thereby presenting new pathways to the MEMS microphone industry.
Key MEMS microphone market players have adopted necessary steps to improve the overall performance and sensitivity of acoustic event-detection products and pervasive voice interfaces through MEMS technology.
In July 2019, Vesper Technologies, developer of advanced acoustic sensors, launched the VM3000, a piezoelectric MEMS Microphone that provides ultra-fast start-up of less than 200 microseconds. This ultra-fast start-up allows systems to wake up fast enough to capture entire keywords and provides two times improvement in keyword accuracy, when used in combination with Vesper ZeroPower Listening Technology.Â
VM3000 features Pulse Density Modulation (PDM) output that enables multiplexing of two microphones on a single data line and offers immunity to radio-frequency and electromagnetic interference. Microphone has 3.5*2.65 mm footprint and achieves 63dB (decibel) signal to noise ratio (SNR) at 1KHz signal. It is reliable, long-lasting, and can easily be operated in harsh environment as it is immune to dust, water, moisture, oil, or other contaminants. VM3000 is ideal for use in broad range of applications, especially in large arrays with lot of RF interferenceÂ
MEMS microphones are prevalent in the automobile sector where it is used to capture voice commands with a view to enable autonomous human-vehicle interaction in smart cars. This enhances security and helps smart vehicles operate with less or no human control.
In December 2019, TDK InvenSense, leading provider of MEMS sensor platforms, launched T4076 and T4078 analog omnidirectional MEMS microphones that offers high SNR and long-term temperature stability. They provide analog output with +1dB sensitivity tolerance and are compliant with lead-free solder processes. T4076 and T4078 have 2.75*1.85*0.9mm and 3.35*2.5*0.98mm surface-mount package respectively. These microphones offer balanced operation, both on high and low performance mode and can operate in a dynamic range. These are especially designed for smartphones, headsets, personal device assistants, cameras, and notebooks.
