The network is ad hoc because it does not rely on a pre-existing infrastructure, such as routers in wired networks or access points in managed wireless networks. Established in 2018, the ABMS program was formed to create a combat cloud MANET. It aimed to transfer the use of the internet of things (IoT) model from civilian technology to the battlefield. The open architecture realizes the vision of joint all domain command and control (JADC2) and enables sensors to inform any shooter in multiple domains, including land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace.
