Orthopedic Bone Cement and Casting Materials Market Outlook 2027

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is an essential component in many total joint arthroplasty procedures. In a cemented arthroplasty, the main functions of the cement are to immobilize the implant, transfer body weight and service loads from the prosthesis to the bone, and increase the load-carrying capacity of the prosthesis-bone cement-bone system. The term “cement,” however, is misleading since bone cement acts more like a grout, filling in space in order to create a tight space to hold the implant against bone. Good quality cement is essential for long-term implant survival. Accurate bone cement mixing and precise application techniques are critical to ensuring the stability and longevity of the prosthesis. Since bone cement is prepared and used in the operating room environment, it is important that all perioperative personnel recognize the unique safety considerations that are related to its preparation and its use. Other types of commercially available bone cement like calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) and Glass polyalkenoate (ionomer) cements (GPCs) are successfully used in a variety of orthopedic and dental applications. CPCs are bio reabsorb able and biocompatible, but are mainly used in cranial and maxilla-facial surgeries because of their low mechanical strength. An orthopedic cast is a shell made up of plaster, which encases a limb to hold and stabilize anatomical structures such as a broken bone.

Covid-19 Scenario analysis:

The coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting 213 countries and territories around the world. COVID-19 has created new challenges that are requiring manufacturers to innovate at speeds they never have before. Supply chain disruptions, social distancing on high-touch assembly lines, limited ability to travel, and the need for oversight add significant complexity to today’s processes. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has created a global health crisis that has had a deep impact on the manufacturing market there is a shortage in supply of raw materials from Chinese manufacturers which has resulted in a severe demand-supply gap. The manufacturers are further expected to be stranded on raw material orders owing to the logistics industry being significantly impacted due to lockdown amid COVID-19. This has all affected the market adversely causing a slowdown in the Orthopedic Bone Cement and Casting Materials market due to shortage of supply and manufacturing.

Top impacting factors: Market Scenario Analysis, Trends, Drivers and Impact analysis:

Drivers:

Increase in accidents causing bone injury:

Every year the lives of approximately 1.35 million people are cut short as a result of a road traffic crash. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury. Road traffic injuries cause considerable economic losses to individuals, their families, and to nations as a whole. These losses arise from the cost of treatment as well as lost productivity for those killed or disabled by their injuries, and for family members who need to take time off work or school to care for the injured. Road traffic crashes cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product. Increasing number of accidents resulting in bone fractures are also expected to increase demand for orthopedic bone cement and casting materials. Also, rise in number of surgeries, trauma cases, amputation due to diabetes and other diseases which are related to bad life style are some of the factors which are likely to increase the sale of bone cement and casting materials products in the years to come.

Development of antibiotic loaded bone cement:

Infections in orthopedic surgery are a serious issue. In recent years, thanks to the improved surgical techniques, to the adoption of stringent and efficient antiseptic pre-operative and intra-operative procedures and, above all, thanks to the optimization of the pre-operative systemic antibiotic prophylaxis a significant reduction in the number of deep infections and subsequent revisions occurred. Antibiotic-loaded bone cement was developed for the treatment of infected joint arthroplasty and for prophylaxes in total joint replacement in selected cases. Despite the widespread use of the antibiotic-loaded bone cement in orthopedics, many issues are still unclear or controversial: bacterial adhesion and antibiotic resistance, modification of mechanical properties which follows the addition of the antibiotic, factors influencing the release of the antibiotic from the cement and the role of the surface, the method for mixing the cement and the antibiotic, the choice and the effectiveness of the antibiotic, the combination of two or more antibiotics, and the toxicity. The innovation of such bone cement is acting like a driver for the market.

Restrains:

The hospital consolidation and cost-containment pressures, reimbursement policies and medical devices excise tax acts as restraining factors for the market growth.
