The economic recession of 2009 hampered the economic condition of several countries. However, the personal care electrical appliance market was not affected by recession, although a slight decline in growth trend was observed. The key reason attributed to this growth was the growing demand for electrical appliances for grooming, which lowered consumer expenses on saloons.

The advent of laser technology is expected to hinder the market for epilators and shavers that are targeted towards women customers. However, adoption of laser technology among women is projected to be sluggish especially in the developing nations. Furthermore, as electric shavers offer better features and performance over manual shavers, it would lead to a shift from disposable razors to electric shavers. The hair straighteners segment has the largest share in the hair care appliances market, followed by hair dryers. The economic downturn in various countries during the last decade has led to drastic change in consumer behavior such as use of personal grooming and styling products at home rather than visiting saloons.

The oral care appliances segment, especially powered toothbrushes, is expected to gain traction during the forecast period. Powered toothbrushes offer better efficiency in terms of plaque removal. Furthermore, ease of operation and customer inclination towards automated appliances have led to increasing adoption of powered toothbrushes.
