Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) Devices Market Overview

Global Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) Devices Market was valued at $637 million in 2015, and is expected to reach $906 million by 2022 supported by a CAGR of 5.2% during the forecast period 2016 to 2022. Postpartum hemorrhage is the most common form of obstetric hemorrhage and is one of the leading cause of maternal mortality. According to the data revealed by WHO, about one quarter of the maternal deaths occur due to postpartum hemorrhage. Postpartum hemorrhage is classified as primary PPH where blood loss is less than 500 ml and secondary PPH having blood loss more than 500ml. Currently, active management of third labor is practiced for preventing PPH which is administered directly after the child birth.

PPH can be treated by first line (non-surgical) methods which involves the adoption of uterotonic drugs such as oxytocin and misoprostol. However, in the absence of drugs, second line intervention devices are adopted such as non-pneumatic anti-shock garment, Uterine balloon tamponade and Uniject prefilled injection systems. Since these devices are effective in stopping the blood flow and stabilize the condition of the patient until substantive care is provided.

Uterine balloon tamponade is a simple and effective second line intervention treatment for PPH. Many healthcare organizations such as global Health Organization (WHO), International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) have involved uterine balloon tamponade as a method to improve the management of PPH.
