A probe card is a device that connects a semiconductor wafer to an electronic test system. The probe card is mechanically attached to a probe and electrically connected to a tester. Its goal is to create an electrical link between the test equipment and the circuits on the wafer, allowing circuit testing and validation at the wafer level, before they are diced and packaged. It consists of a printed circuit board (PCB) and some sort of contact elements, which are metallic but may also be made of other materials. Probe card is a custom connector that takes the universal pattern of a given tester and translates the signals to connect to electrical pads on the wafer, due to which a semiconductor manufacturer is expected to require a new probe card for each new device wafer and for device shrinks (when the manufacturer reduces the size of the device while maintaining its functionality).
