In a radio receiver circuit, the circuit between antenna and mixer is known as RF (radio frequency) front end module. The RF front end module consists of all the components in the receiver that process the original incoming signal before it is converted to a lower intermediate frequency (IF). It consists of RF amplifier, local oscillator, band pass RF filter, and mixer. A band-pass filter (BPF) reduces the image response. It also prevents strong out-of-band signals from saturating the input stages. An RF amplifier/low-noise amplifier (LNA) is used to increase the sensitivity of the receiver by amplifying weak signals without contaminating them with noise.
A local oscillator (LO) is used to generate a radio frequency signal at an offset from the incoming signal, which is mixed with the incoming signal. The mixer is used to mix the incoming signal with the signal from the local oscillator to convert the signal into intermediate frequency (IF). In modern integrated wireless receivers such as Wi-Fi receivers and cell phones, the RF front end modules include the components such as antenna and analog to digital converter, to digitize the intermediate frequency. Generally, to implement RF front end module, silicon-germanium and silicon are used. These modules are used in tablets, smartphones, and PCs. Geographically, Europe and Asia-Pacific contribute the largest share to the market. Application wise smartphones dominate the RF front end module market. Component wise, RF filters are dominating the market, as they are used mostly in smartphones because RF filters are compact and can be easily fitted in the smartphones. RF filters minimizes noise or interference in the smartphones.
In addition, nowadays there is an increase in next generation wireless networks, which is expected to fuel the RF front end module market growth.
