Shale gas is a natural gas trapped within the shale formations or beneath the rocks. Hydraulic fracturing is a technique used for the extraction of shale gas that involves fracturing the rock formations by injecting a high-pressure liquid (generally a mixture of water and sand) to create cracks in the deep rocks through which the natural gas flows. When pressure is removed, the sand particles are mixed with the liquid, which hold the cracks, thereby allowing the continuous flow of gas. Plug & perf and sliding sleeve techniques perform hydraulic fracturing for the extraction of shale gas. Â Plug & perf is the most common technique used in case of horizontal wells. In this technique, a bridge plug is pumped down on a wireline with a perforating gun and is set at a specific location in the horizontal well. The gun is the set off and the zone is perforated. This process is repeated several times.
Rapid industrialization across the globe and depleting conventional reserves of natural resources have fueled the growth of the shale gas hydraulic fracturing market. Lower carbon emissions from shale gas compared to coal have led many industries to adopt it as a source of energy. With the decrease in production levels of several oil & gas reserves, a gap has been created between the demand and supply. Therefore, a shift toward extraction of natural resources from unconventional reserves is observed around the globe.Â
Modern technology, such as hydraulic fracturing, coupled with horizontal drilling is applied frequently by different industries for the extraction of natural gas. Therefore, evolution of these modern technologies has accelerated the shale gas hydraulic fracturing market growth. However, high capital costs and strict regulations imposed by regulatory bodies, such as the Energy Information Agency (EIA), for adverse environmental impacts might affect the growth of the market. Rise in concerns about the depleting conventional natural resources and the escalating demand for energy in different industries have led to the increase in demand for unconventional sources of energy such as shale gas.Â
The North America shale gas hydraulic fracturing market holds the largest share of the global shale gas hydraulic fracturing market, with the U.S. and Canada accounting for the major share. Skilled workforce and adequate investments have led to the growth of the market in the region. Moreover, the Asia-Pacific shale gas hydraulic fracturing market is expected to grow at a significant pace with the rise in demand for energy in emerging economies such as China.Â
