Shock-wave lithotripsy (SWL) is done with a machine that can break kidney stones from outside the body. To break the stone, focused shock waves (short pulses of high energy sound waves) are transmitted to the stone through the skin. The stone absorbs the energy of the shock waves and breaks into smaller pieces. The stone fragments then pass with urine. Shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) is a noninvasive procedure for breaking up kidney stones with high-energy shock waves. SWL is the least invasive and least risky approach for stone treatment. Shock waves from outside the body are targeted at a kidney stone causing the stone to fragment. It is sometimes known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (EWSL).
COVID-19 scenarioanalysis:
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has created an economic crisis along with a health care crisis. COVID-19 pandemic has stretched healthcare system worldwide, wherein developed countries are expected to cause economic recession. The COVID-19 pandemic has an adverse impact on the healthcare system, resulting in 50% to 70% drop in revenue from March 2020. Many small hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes have been forced to shut their operations. Social distancing and localized curfews have resulted in delayed elective surgical procedures. In addition, visa cancellations have led to a hiatus in medical tourism and can negatively impact the healthcare services market growth.
Top impacting factors: Market scenario analysis, trends, drivers, and impact analysis
The major factor affecting the industry includesurge in the penetration as this technology as it is used globally and the other advantages such as least invasive nature, minimal pain, and rapid recovery time with the help of the shock wave lithotripsy. These advantages would help the industry to gain traction in the coming years.Rise in the number of procedures and surge in healthcare expenditure in various developed and developing countries are expected to boost the industry over the forecast period. The increase in prevalence of obesity and related lifestyle disorders is expected to help the industry to flourish in the next few years. Furthermore, increase in awareness and surge in preventive treatment by the affected population are anticipated to help the industry gain higher revenue in the coming years.
Growth in the number of product launches to boost the shock wave lithotripsy market
Increase in the number of product launches such that the demand in the market is fulfilled would boost the industry in the coming years. For instance, in September 2019, Dornier MedTech (Dornier), a global urology company and a leader in kidney stone management, launched the new OptiVision technology for the Dornier Delta III at the German Urology Congress (DGU) 2019 in Hamburg. OptiVision is the first image post-processing software designed specifically to improve stone treatment outcomes. The product will be immediately available in Europe.
Developed in consultation with over 20 leading urologists globally, OptiVision has been designed to provide urologists with clearer stone visualization during extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) treatments. Installed in new Dornier Delta III, OptiVision processes and enhances images captured from radiography, contributing to improved accuracy for initial stone targeting, providing real-time feedback on the progress of stone fragmentation, and assisting treatment outcome evaluations with precision.
Surge in the number of patient population to propel the market
Increase in the number of patients of kidney stonesis anticipated to help the industryboost in the coming years. For instance, according to the National Kidney Foundation in 2017, approximately 37 million American adults (1 in 7 adults; 15% of adults) are estimated to have chronic kidney disease (CKD), but most don’t know they have it. In fact, about 1 in 2 people, with very low kidney function (not on dialysis) don’t know they have CKD.
Approximately 1 in 3 adults with diabetes and 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure may have CKD. In 2017, 746,557 Americans had kidney failure, and needed dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive. Nearly 500,000 of these patients received dialysis at least 3 times per week to replace kidney function. Nearly 125,000 people started ESKD treatment in 2017, of which 120,834 started dialysis, and 20,945 received a kidney transplant. At the end of 2017, more than 222,848 Americans were living with a kidney transplant.
