Shoulder Arthroscopy Market Research, 2032

The global shoulder arthroscopy market size was valued at $432.5 million in 2022, and is projected to reach $712.1 million by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 5.1% from 2023 to 2032. The growth of the shoulder arthroscopy market is attributed to an increase in the demand for minimal invasive procedures, technological advancements in arthroscopy equipment and rise in incidence of shoulder injuries. Increase in cases of sport injuries is a major cause of shoulder injuries such as labral tear and rotator cuff tears. For instance, according to report published by National Safety Council of U.S. 2022, stated that, in 2021, approx. 20% rise in sports and recreational injuries was observed as compared to 2020. Thus, an increase in the number of sport related injuries led to a rise in demand for shoulder arthroscopy, which, in turn, propels the market growth.

Shoulder Arthroscopy Market

Key Takeaways

  • The arthroscope segment dominated the global shoulder arthroscopy market share in 2022.

  • The rotator cuff tears segment dominated the global market in 2022 and is anticipated to be the fastest-growing segment

  • The hospitals segment dominated the market in terms of revenue in 2022.

  • The others segment in end user is anticipated to be the fastest growing segment during the forecast period.

  • North America dominated the market in terms of revenue in 2022, whereas the Asia-Pacific is anticipated to be the fastest growing segment during the shoulder arthroscopy market forecast period.

Arthroscopy of the shoulder is a surgical procedure in which a small camera, known as an arthroscope, is used to examine or repair tissues within or around the shoulder joint. The camera is inserted into the shoulder through a small incision in the skin. The procedure involves the use of various high-quality equipment and instruments which are minimally invasive in nature. Instruments such as arthroscopes, power shaver systems, arthroscopic implants, fluid management system, radio frequency (RF) systems, visualization systems and others are used for carrying out the procedure.

The procedure involves the insertion of arthroscope into the shoulder through a small incision which is connected to a video monitor in the operating room. Detection of abnormal or injured bone or ligament is done by real time observation through the pictures and any damage is repaired at the same time. Shoulder arthroscopy is most recommended for shoulder problems such as a torn or damaged cartilage ring (labrum) or ligaments, shoulder instability, in which the shoulder joint is loose and slides around too much or becomes dislocated, a torn or damaged biceps tendon, a torn rotator cuff and others.

Market Dynamics

Growth of the shoulder arthroscopy market is majorly driven by increase in the incidence of sports injuries, technological advancement in arthroscopy instrument, and surge in ageing population. Sport injuries caused by basketball, tennis, and volleyball place more strain on the shoulder joint. In addition, the high intensity sport training led to a rise in the number of injuries, which increases the demand for shoulder arthroscopy and subsequently increases the demand for its products.

Further, rise in technological advancement and increase in research and development activities by market key players in the field of shoulder arthroscopy boost the growth of the market. Shoulder arthroscopy systems have undergone several developments in recent years such as advancement in minimally invasive arthroscopy techniques have become the standard, as they allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times. For instance, in July 2021, Stryker, a global medical device company received the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its balloon implant which is used in arthroscopic treatment of massive irreparable rotator cuff tears. This implant restores the subacromial space without need of any fixation devices and improves the shoulder function.

Furthermore, the surge in the aging population and rise in demand for minimally invasive surgeries further drives the market growth. Older people are more susceptible to various musculoskeletal problems due to various risk factors such as decreased bone quality and poor blood supply. Therefore, there is a greater need for medical interventions such as shoulder arthroscopy to treat shoulder related injuries. For instance, according to the National Centers for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), January 2023, rotator cuff injuries are common and increase with age. In addition, the prevalence rate of asymptomatic full-thickness tears is 40% in the 75-year-old population. Further, the increase in demand for minimally invasive surgeries also drives the growth of the shoulder arthroscopy market size.

On the other hand, high cost of shoulder arthroscopy surgeries is anticipated to limit the adoption of arthroscopy systems during the forecast period. Shoulder arthroscopy surgeries are costly as they require specialized medical equipment and technology such as robotic assisted surgery systems and arthroscopy instruments which are expensive. In addition, these surgeries are complex and require a skilled surgeon and their services can be costly. Therefore, the expensive surgical cost is unaffordable for the few patients, which negatively affects the growth of the market. For instance, shoulder arthroscopy ranges from $2,611 to $19,523. Moreover, products, surgery and other related costs raise the overall cost of surgery. Thus, the high cost of shoulder arthroscopy hampers the growth of the market.

Numerous sectors of the economy, particularly the pharmaceutical, medical technology and biotechnology industries, have been impacted by the ongoing global recession. Elective surgeries may get postponed due to financial downturn and purchasing power from healthcare sector may also be affected to some extent. Healthcare systems may face budget pressures and a shift in priorities, impacting orthopedic availability. However, the situation is anticipated to return to normal after the recession and demand for shoulder arthroscopy may rise in coming years, if healthcare spendings are managed efficiently.
