Tantalum finds use as a modern metal because of its properties of capacitance, hardness, erosion resistance, and high heat resistance. A tantalum electrolytic capacitor, an individual from the group of electrolytic capacitors, is a polarized capacitor whose anode terminal (+) is made of tantalum on which a thin protecting oxide layer is formed and this acts as the dielectric of the capacitor. A strong or liquid electrolyte that covers the surface of the oxide layer fills in as the second cathode terminal () of the capacitor. Because of its thin and moderately high permittivity dielectric layer, the tantalum capacitor distinguishes itself from other customary and electrolytic capacitors in having high capacitance per volume (high volumetric efficiency) and lower weight.
