Ultrasound guided endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure to diagnose & treat lung and digestive (gastrointestinal) diseases. It combines the advantages of ultrasound imaging & endoscopic access, allowing health care providers to accurately access the conditions of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Ultrasound guided endoscopy involves use of special endoscope which produce detailed images of walls and lining of chest, digestive track, and other organs such as lymph nodes, liver, and pancreas. It may help in evaluation of lymphoma, Barrett’s esophagus, neuroendocrine tumors, pancreatitis & pancreatic cysts, bile duct stones, and sarcoidosis. In addition, it may help in evaluation of cancer of esophagus, stomach, colon, lung, and ampulla of Vater, and rectum. Moreover, it can help to evaluate imaging tests, such as cysts of the pancreas, drainage of pseudocysts, and abnormal collection of fluid in the abdomen. It is performed on an outpatient basis in hospitals, diagnostic centers, and ambulatory surgery centers. Radial scanning and linear scanning technology is used in ultrasound guided endoscopy procedure.
