The vane pump market is experiencing significant growth and is expected to grow significantly in the next few years. A vane pump is a positive displacement pump that uses the reciprocating motion of a rectangular vane in a slot to move a liquid. Vane pumps are capable of handling thin and low-viscous fluids such as water and petrol. They are often used in fuel loading and transport facilities owing to their capability to handle fluids with a wide range of viscosities.

They are further used in various automobile applications, such as power steering and transmission pumps. They are capable of handling fluids with varying pressures and temperatures. They generally operate between a flow ranges of 20 to 9,500 lpm. Vane pumps are known for their capacity to develop vacuums and do dry runs, and they are less sensitive to viscosity and pressure variations. Major players in the industry are focusing on developing more efficient and cost-effective vane pumps.

Description

A typical vane pump consists of a casing, outlet port, shaft, rotor, sliding vanes, and cam ring. A vane pump is a positive displacement pump that is used to increase the pressure of flowing fluids with the help of vanes that are mounted on a rotor. Some vanes pumps have variable length vanes, but some vanes can be tensioned to maintain contact between the walls as the pump rotates. They can be equipped in various configurations including sliding vane, flexible vane, swinging vane, rolling vane, and external vane. Vanes can operate in temperatures ranging from 32°C to 260°C.

COVID-19 Impact analysis

  • The COVID-19 pandemic ceased the production of vane pumps, attributed to the lockdown in countries worldwide. This has hampered the growth of the vane pump market in recent months and is expected to continue through 2022.
  • COVID-19 affected the sales of vane pumps in the second quarter of 2020 as the demand witnessed a steep decline due to restrictions on automotive manufacturing activities. Leading companies in the automotive industry have reduced production amid declining demand due to COVID19.
  • The major demand for vane pumps was previously noticed in countries including China, the UK, Mexico, Brazil, India, and the U.S. subjected to heavy rainfall, which is negatively affected by the spread of COVID-19, thereby decreasing the demand for vane pumps.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected the vane pump manufacturing units due to the restrictions laid on factory operations. Vane pump manufacturers are expected to focus on protecting their workforce, operations, and supply chains to respond to immediate crises and find new ways of working after COVID-19. For instance, provision of sanitizers, maintaining social distance, as well as ensuring the vaccination of every employee in the company can assist in promoting the health and safety of the workforce.
  • Increase in vaccination drives and leniency in the COVID-19 restrictions has resulted in the recovery of automotive industry, thus being a positive factor in the recovery of vane pump market.

Top Impacting Factors

Despite the recent down trend in the automotive industry, it is predicted to grow steadily in the coming years, which is a major driver for the vane pump industry in the forecast period. Rise in global population has also fueled industries, thereby creating a demand for chemicals and gases. The ability to handle low viscosity fluids, such as alcohols, solvents, ammonia, and LPG, drives the vane pimp market. However, the complex design of vane pumps and their inability to handle highly viscous fluids is a major restraint in the growth of vane pump market. The rapid development of EVs is expected to boost the automotive industry, due to low maintenance and operating costs of EVs. Furthermore, surge in purchasing power of countries in the Asia-Pacific - is expected to boost the automotive industry in the region. According to the International Energy Agency, India has approximately 25 vehicles per thousand people as of 2020, and the number is expected to reach 150 by the year 2040. Increase in number of vehicles in the Asia-Pacific is expected to create lucrative growth opportunities for the vane pump market.

Market Trends

  • Major players in the industry are launching new products to expand their product portfolio. For instance, in January 2021, Osaka Vacuum, Ltd. launched VSV series of direct drive oil sealed single-stage rotary vane pump. The new vane pump is lightweight and has two shift adjustable gas ballast valve.
  • Enhancing efficiency and reducing noise levels is also a major area for focus of vane pump manufacturers. For instance, Daikin Industries Ltd. offers a compact single stage vane pump with low noise level and high efficiency achieved by using cushion plate system and cam ring.
