In end-stage of a kidney disease, the kidneys are not able to perform their functions such as filtering and eliminating of blood wastes and other fluids. Majority of the people suffering from end-stage kidney disease have to depend on dialysis treatment. It also minimizes the patient visits to hospitals for dialysis treatment.
The wearable artificial kidney contains a hemofilter that filters the incoming blood containing toxins along with sugars and salts. A bioreactor present in this artificial kidney processes the filtrate and segregates salts and sugars and sends them into the blood stream again. Simultaneously, water is also absorbed and the concentrated filtrate carrying metabolic wastes is directed to urinary bladder for excretion.
