Wound Debridement Market Overview

The wound debridement market size was valued at $4,133.40 million in 2020 and is projected to reach $5,675.27 million by 2030, registering a CAGR of 3.2% from 2021 to 2030. Wound debridement is the medical removal of dead, damaged, infected tissue all thickened skin or callus, nonviable, and necrotic tissue to improve the healing potential of remaining tissue. In addition, the major factor that boosts the growth of the wound debridement market include increase in incidence of chronic wounds such as pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, infectious wounds, radiation wounds, arterial ulcers, and acute wound, including burn and trauma. Moreover, rise in aging population around the globe further drives the growth of the wound debridement market due to rise in number of cases of diabetic foot ulcers among the elderly.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has disrupted workflows in the healthcare sector across the globe. Moreover, there has also been a negative effect and decrease in demand for various medical services, including wound debridement products.

However, high cost of advanced wound care products limits the market growth of wound debridement during the forecast period. In contrast, growth potential in emerging economies is expected to provide lucrative opportunities for wound debridement product adoption. The market is majorly driven by high incidence of diabetic foot ulcers and other target wounds, availability of reimbursement in developed economies, and rising number of burn cases.

COVID-19 Impact

Coronavirus (COVID-19) was discovered in December 2019 in Hubei province of Wuhan city in China. The disease is caused by a virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is transmitted from humans to humans.

After its discovery in Wuhan, the disease rapidly spread to other parts of the globe. Moreover, this virus causes various symptoms in patients, which range from common symptoms to serious symptoms. For instance, common symptoms include fever, dry cough, and fatigue. However, serious symptoms include difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, and loss of speech or movement. Furthermore, the virus has high potential of lethality in geriatric population. On 11th March 2020, the World Health Organization made an assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as pandemic. In addition, there are only a few vaccines that received emergency approvals for COVID-19 treatment or prevention. Thus, social distancing is observed as the most important measure to stop the spread of this disease. Furthermore, to maintain social distancing, various countries across the world have adopted nationwide lockdowns.

Almost every nation is dealing with the outbreak. Most markets are experiencing a decline, owing to the outbreak. The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented global public health challenge and the overall impact of COVID-19 pandemic remained negative for key players in the wound debridement industry. According to article published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, 2 surveys were performed in Italy, in which the first survey was completed by 46 respondents. In this, 82.6% of cases, MD and nurses observed a decrease in patients’ appointments. In case of missed appointments, contact with the patient was not maintained in 21.7% of cases.

The most used contact method was telephone calls (58.7% of cases), with messages as the second one (43.5%). In half of the cases, MD and nurses have changed their dressing methods, by simplifying it; but only in 17.4%, they made a video to educate patients and caregivers on the proper way to wound care. The second survey was completed by 39 respondents. From their point of view, only 22.6% of cases went to the wound clinic as usual. In 59% of cases, the frequency of appointments at the clinic has drastically decreased. In case of missed appointments, 60.9% of cases did not maintain any type of contact with the specialist.

Product Segment Review

On the basis of product, the market is categorized into gels, ointments & creams, surgical devices, debridement pads, and others. The ointments & creams segment dominated the global market in 2020 and is anticipated to continue this trend during the forecast period. Rise in number of cases of acute wounds, including burn, trauma, surgical wounds, and chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcer and pressure ulcer, drives the growth of this segment as ointments & creams are majorly used as a primary dressing for these wounds.

Wound debridement products are the basic products intended for the management of non-severe and acute wounds. These products are generally used to clean wound, seize bleeding, hydrate wounds, close the open trauma & surgical wounds, and dry the wound to help it heal faster.

Increase in cases of patients suffering from diabetes as well as rise in prevalence of chronic wounds such as pressure ulcer, diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, arterial ulcers; increase in number of patients undergoing surgeries; and rise in geriatric population are expected to drive the growth of the wound debridement market. Moreover, improving regulatory scenarios in developing countries are expected to provide lucrative opportunities for wound product adoption. Furthermore, surge in development and adoption of advanced wound care products may hamper the market growth of the wound debridement market during the forecast period.

The ointments & creams segment is expected to remain dominant during the forecast period, owing to increase in demand for wound debridement products due to increase in acute and chronic wounds. In addition, the acute wound segment is expected to account for the largest revenue during the forecast period, owing to growing cases of trauma globally. Moreover, North America is expected to offer lucrative opportunities to the key players during the forecast period due to growing geriatric population and rising prevalence of acute and chronic wounds along with the presence of developed infrastructure in the healthcare industry.
