Increase in Demand for DPU-Based Smart NICs

Modern workloads and data center architectures put too much networking overhead on the CPU cores, which is one of the most critical reasons why the world needs DPU (Data Processing Unit) based SmartNICs. With speedier networking (up to 200Gb/s per link), the CPU is just wasting too many of its cores classifying, tracking, and guiding network traffic. These pricey CPU cores are intended for general-purpose application processing. Application processing analyzes data and generates results that create actual value.

Compute virtualization exacerbates this problem by increasing server traffic both internally (between VMs or containers) and externally (to other servers or storage). Software-defined storage (SDS), hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) and big data applications all increase the amount of east-west traffic between servers, whether virtual or physical, and RDMA is frequently used to speed up data transfers between servers.

 The usage of overlay networks, such as VXLAN, NVGRE, or Geneve, which are becoming increasingly common for public and private clouds, complicates the network by introducing layers of encapsulation. Additional packet steering and processing needs are imposed by software-defined networking (SDN), and the CPU is burdened with even more work such as running the SDN controller. Smarter NICs can manage all of this virtualization (SRIOV, RDMA, overlay network traffic encapsulation, and OVS offload) faster, more efficiently, and for less money than traditional CPUs.

Increase in Demand for Virtualizing Storage and The Cloud

Virtualizing software-defined storage, hyperconverged infrastructure, and other cloud resources is an emerging use case for DPU-based SmartNICs. Prior to the virtualization boom, most servers only used local storage, which is inefficient but simple to use—every OS, application, and hypervisor understands how to utilize it. Then came the rise of network storage, which included SAN and NAS, as well as NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF).

However, not every application is SAN-aware out of the box, and some operating systems and hypervisors (such as Windows and VMware) do not currently support NVMe-oF. Virtualizing networked storage–which is more efficient and easier to manage–to look like local storage–which is easier for apps to consume–is something smart NICs can achieve. A DPU-based SmartNIC might even virtualize GPUs (or other neural network processors) so that every server on the network can access as many GPUs as it wants at any time.

Software-defined storage and hyperconverged infrastructure share a similar advantage in that they both use a management layer (often running as a VM or as part of the hypervisor itself) to virtualize and abstract local storage—and the network—to make it available to other servers or clients across the cluster. This is great for quick installations on commodity servers and sharing storage resources, but the layer of management and virtualization consumes a lot of CPU cycles that could be used to run the apps.

The faster the networking and storage devices run, the more CPU must be given to virtualizing these resources, just as it is with regular servers. SmartNICs may also offload a range of SDS and HCI services, such as compression, encryption, deduplication, RAID, and reporting, for freeing up more expensive CPU cores.
