Disodium EDTA is sodium salt of EDTA that is employed as a chelating agent, stabilizer, preservative, or sequestering agent in a range of products. As it has many roles, disodium EDTA plays an essential role in the cosmetics, food, pharmaceutical, and fertilizer industries. The various authorizing bodies have approved the use of disodium EDTA in specified amounts in food items, particularly for food processing. It is mostly used to keep food products from becoming rancid, as well as to maintain color and flavor. EDTA stands for ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, a stabilizer used in cosmetics to keep chemicals from binding with trace elements (especially minerals) found in the formula.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

  • The spread of COVID-19 prompted strict lockdown in several parts of the world, hampering a variety of sectors.
  • The gyms and fitness centers were closed down due to lockdowns causing a fall in the demand.
  • Supply chain disruption, restrictions on shipping & trade, and the shutdown of critical manufacturers are just a few of the reasons that have had an influence on the broader economy.
  • The food business was affected by the pandemic. The food industries are labor-intensive, social distancing rules impeded the production capacity during the early stages of the pandemic.
  • Some forms of EDTA were used in the treatment of patients diagnosed with COVID-19.

Top Impacting Factors

  • For its usage in minute quantities in food preparations, disodium EDTA requires permission from internationally recognized standards. The FSSC 22000 certificate issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and PAS 220 issued by the British Standards Institute are required. These certifications have been approved by the Global Food Safety Initiative.
  • The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel has cleared it for use in over the counter (OTC) personal care products.
  • EDTA is a metal-binding chelating agent. It is most recognized for treating calcific band keratopathy, but it is also been used to treat corneal injuries caused by calcium hydroxide, more popularly known as lime burns. It has been demonstrated to inactivate trace levels of heavy metals in very low concentrations when used as a preservative.

Market Trends
An Indispensible Ingredient in Cosmetics

Cosmetics and personal care items commonly contain disodium EDTA. It is primarily used to preserve items by assisting in the prevention of deterioration, rancidity, and the protection of scent compounds. The addition of disodium EDTA has proven to improve the cleaning effectiveness of the product by allowing it to foam. It works as a chelating agent, preventing metal ions from building up on the skin, scalp, or hair. Soaps, moisturizers, shampoos, and contact lens solution all include it. As more study into its applications is conducted, the use of disodium EDTA in cosmetic products has become increasingly widespread. EDTA is mostly used as a preservative, although it can be utilized to improve a product's foaming ability due to which EDTA is h found in soaps and cleansers. It is such a powerful element that many natural companies are expected to utilize it in their formulas as it is difficult to replace.

Wide Range of Uses in the Medical Sector

Intravenous EDTA is used to treat lead poisoning and brain damage caused by lead poisoning; to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for suspected lead poisoning; to treat poisonings caused by radioactive materials such as plutonium, thorium, uranium, and strontium; to remove copper in patients with Wilson's disease; and to lower calcium levels in people who have too much calcium. EDTA is given intravenously to treat heart and blood vessel problems such as irregular heartbeat caused by substances called cardiac glycosides, "hardening of the arteries" (atherosclerosis), chest pain (angina), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, and poor blood circulation. A chelator, EDTA is a water-soluble substance. Chelators, also known as chelating agents, attach to mineral ions and render them inert and due to its chelating properties, EDTA can be used as a preservative and to assist products perform better in water with a lot of dissolved minerals or hard water.

EDTA serves as a preservative by inactivating minerals such as calcium, zinc, and magnesium within the cell, limiting the creation of biofilms and the outer membranes. Biofilms are a protective barrier that bacteria create to shield themselves from the outside world.
